Question about TV Stations now

I have question about TV stations now. The other day WIS channel 10 in Columbia pulled off the soaps to show a basketball game, this seemed great to me but not so great to my Mother Inlaw or my Wife. Where we live they were both able to go to channel 2 WCBD in Charleston and watch them. What I was wondering is why WIS didn't use any of their 10.2 10.3 10.4 feeds to show either the basketball game or the soaps so they could keep both audiences watching their station.

Probably had to do with their affiliation agreement. Soaps were probably preemptable without having to run as many or any make-goods.

Must be their affiliate agreement. WCSC pulled off the soaps to air the ACC tournament this week and the soaps, "The Talk" and "Let's Make a Deal" aired on Live 5+, their 5.2 channel.

However, none of the smaller cable systems in the area along with satellite pick it up, so people were mad.

When news coverage pre-empts soaps, the DC stations will run the soaps, but after the late-night network programming.

If I understand correctly, WIS-TV did run the soaps and other things on 10.2 and 121 on Time Warner here in Columbia and more than likely on some of the smaller cable systems and satellites, there wasn't coverage or at least there was not on Dish Network which is what I use.

i can understand them not being live on most weekends but with an event like that occuring on friday morning news coverage on the aftermath warents special coverage on that weekend.it shows that they are really not a dedicated news channel.

if something major happens on the weekend them not covering would make them look real bad.do they think major news takes weekends off?

like radio, local tv stations don't care either. the best they can do is have their best talent on when there is a weather event and they can plan for that. radio has eas, but unless it's in the forecast the broadcast media fails with a few exceptions during regular business hours.

The question is really about how network/local TV can provide secondary service with special programming be it soaps and basketball or the local arts festival or events going on in their area be it sports, news or what have you it seems that they could now cover just about anything going on national or local with that many feeds to broadcast from. Another thing I can't understand is why a TV station shouldn't be able to get commericals on their second and third feeds. They should be lower priced with less production work needed for local businesses that need ad's but can't afford the main feed, of course the coverage wouldn't be as great but still there would be quit a bit of coverage out there. It just seems like so many things are being missed here.

This time next year their won't be a problem as ESPN will have the ACC rights. So the Raycom networks won't need to pre-empt any programs.

I guess that will solve one problem and start another. If they could afford it it would great to to cover some of the local games on a second feed.

I totally agree. Those sub channels can be used to generate at least, SOME, profit. Most stations don't seem to see the potential in selling to clients who can't afford the main channel but who would receive tremendous value for money spent. I am seeing some local spots on WIS 10.2(THIS) however. None on 25.4(METV), which should be an easy sell. I fear that if these sub channels don't start producing some revenue they will be shut down. Hope not.

USC played Clemson in baseball this year. The mid-series game was supposed to be played in Greenville was supposed to be aired by WACH-57 and other FOX affililliates across the state. The Game was postponed to the following Tuesday but, it was carried by WIS 10.2. I don't know what happpened in the other markets.

The TV subchannels have a serious problem. They reach all current OTA viewers and maybe half of cable viewers (since they are usually on digital tiers). They reach NO satelite viewers (which means they have no chance in at least 30% of all homes), and probably never will. However, I love Me-TV and THIS TV, and wish them the best of luck.

Probly close to half the cable systems in this country would have gone under or close to it if they had not come up with a way to provide high speed internet and this would have been due to satellite TV. Satellite TV has no real way to provide high speed internet with good bandwidth other than Hughes Net or Wild Blue and their bandwidth sucks bad. This gave cable a great advantage with internet service althou it sometimes drops speed when everyone tries to get on line at the same time this doesn't happen too often where as satellite internet cuts their bandwidth and speed evertime you use it if you do anything more than a simple download. Now you mention the fact that satellite TV doesn't have most of the newer OTA digital second and third channel feeds that can be received off an out side antenna. This sounds like another service that satellite TV fails to provide that others services do which puts them another step behind the rest, alot of people just haven't thought about it yet.
