Question about WBGC-AM 1240/Chipley

I believe this station was once owned by the late Homer Rhoden.

It has been silent under an STA filed in November. What exactly was its format
prior to going silent? STA says it is looking for an alternative program source.

I haven't listened to this station in about 5 years. I read somewhere the format is/was "Variety," but when I listened they were playing Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and other Classic Country artists, so I assume the actual format was Classic Country. There is not a lot of info on this station. At one time, it was listed as being owned by Jacqulyn Collier Pembroke.

Travis

Thanks, Travis. I remember when it was classic country as well.

Jacqueline Pembroke is still the owner of the station and turns out, I know who she is.
Her late husband, John, and I were friends. He owned several stations, including WSTT in
Thomasville, Ga., for a while. He sold most of them before his death several years ago.

Hi ya'll. Since 1996 I have been the GM, PD, CE, OM, etc of WBGC. The station is currently dark and in the process of being sold. I expect the station will be back on the air later this summer. The format at the time it went dark was Dial-Global Adult Standards with FOX and FNN News. There was no local programming (on the bird 24/7). Programming for the "new" station has not yet been decided. There will be further announcements once the paperwork is filed with the FCC. If I can answer any questions, contact me.

The FCC shows that the station has been silent since 11-24-2008. On 11-24-2009, the license will be automatically forfeited unless the station is returned to the air AND the FCC is notified, in writing, that it is back on. No filings for change of control are currently listed in the FCC database as pending.

The deal I mentioned earlier fell through. Spoke with the owner's son Friday. He will be coming to town very shortly to help me get the station up and running again. I am well aware of deadlines and FCC rules. Stay tuned.

Tom

PS I said I had been involved with the station since 1996, I meant 2006.

I suggest an iPod on shuffle with IDs for a week. Remain in the main studio location 9-5 M-F the entire time it is on the air, answer the phone and have the public file at hand. Broadcast a working local phone number for the station a few times. Broadcast an EAS test and log any that come in. Tower lights on (and should have been working all year), etc.

Document, certify and notify the FCC in writing, file a new silent notification, then an STA when it goes off again.

Good luck. Would be a shame to see a license lost.
Perhaps there is a way the station can get back on the air at a reasonable ongoing cost or break even.

I hate seeing any station license being cancelled as they are too difficult, competive and costly to get these days. I especially hate seeing a small community lose its ONLY local radio service. If I can help in any way, let me know. My contact information is located at the bottom of my post.

FWIW, this is the kind of situation that may best lend itself to an extremely community oriented selling process, basically using the very legitimate position of "saving local Chipley radio."

Consider approaching any-and-all businesses in Chipley and Washington County with one-and-only-one plan that provides them with a 60-second announcement every other hour, 24/7/365, limited to 40-and-only-40 participants for the princely sum of $365 net per month. A dollar a spot. That's 20 spots per hour (4 stop sets with 5 spots each). It amounts to $14,600 a month or $175,200 yearly.

No, you won't get rich. But, yes, if your expectations from this project are appropriately modest, this amount would be enough to keep the thing on the air and--if you focus on gathering & broadcasting local news, local sports, local weather and every damn local event that comes along (yeah, everything)--you could have a nice little local success story on your hands. Involving as many retirees & student interns for fun and/or credit could be a key.

Good luck.

20 minutes of commercials per hour 24/7? Sounds like a bit much - four 5 minute breaks plus any news or local - ?????

Ever been to Chipley? WBGC won't be playing any Arbitron games, so TSL & AQH don't matter. If this 1-kw AM in a town of 3600 people in a county of 22,000 has any reason for existing, at all, it isn't to battle the dozen FM sticks booming in from Dothan & Panama City over who can play the most music. It will be solely about providing hyper-local information and promoting local teams, local causes & local organizations. Whatever music WBGC will play--if it chooses to play any at all--will be incidental, since nobody is going to listen to the station for music anyway.

Twenty announcements each hour about local businesses isn't too much if the station exists to provide information about the local community. Besides, that presumes they actually sell out. They (we all) should be so lucky!

Still sounds like alot, but the main issue would be finding 40 sponsors that will spend that much in that area. Sounds like a good plan though.

I am pleased to report WBGC will return to the air this weekend. The power will be back on later today and I will be making an inspection to report on conditions in the studio/transmitter building to the late owner's son. We will be returning to our oldies/adult standards format and re-adding Fox and FNN news in the coming days. Other local programs are in the works.

On a related development, I am sad to report the passing of WBGC owner Dr. Jacquelyn Collier Pembroke after a long illness this past Monday. Her son, Rev. Arthur Collier III will be moving to this area in the next few months to assume a full-time role in the operation of the station.

Thank you to all the inquiries and comments on WBGC. They are greatly appreciated. Please pray for Rev. Collier during this difficult time and for a new beginning for Washington County's only broadcast outlet 1240AM WBGC.

Good luck from WKIQ 1240 AM in Eustis, Florida. Anything we can do give us a call.

Tom,
Good news, sad news. Sorry to hear about the owner but I am happy to hear her son is stepping up, even in this difficult time. Cutting it close though, dont forget the letter to the FCC when you git 'er cranked up!!!

Good luck, were all pulling for you,

In this time of transition and remembrance for the family, it is good to see that a family radio station is likely to avoid cancellation of the license.

As the earlier poster said, notify the FCC of resumption of broadcasting. The notification can be made using the FCC CDBS system, and I recommend following it up by letter via hand or overnight delivery. It's wise to have the attorney do it, do not drop a letter in the mail. You need the confirmation from CDBS or the hand stamped copy back from the FCC.

Good luck!
