Question about WHAS Signal

I can just barely hear WHAS here in Martinsville both day and night,, its full of noise,, but up in Chicago it came in just fine.. Is it ground wave skywave cancellation,, also I noticed I could get 700 WLW and 870 WWL up there better than at home,, even WSM was blasting in.

Interesting. Since you are noticing the change with more than one station, I wonder if it is something in your immediate area that is effecting the signals? How far is Martinsville from Louisville? from Cincinnati?

I'm not an engineer, but I think your ground/skywave guess is a very good one. I've never been able to get WHAS very well in Franklin/Greenwood. The reception improves as you head north.

My guess is you are spot on with the ground/skywave cancellation. A long time ago WLW reduced their tower height from its original 831 feet to 747 feet. The original height produced a groundwave/skywave cancellation ring which went through Columbus, Indianapolis, Lexington and Louisville. (http://hawkins.pair.com/wlw.shtml)

Im right by Indianapolis, so im about 100 miles from both stations. Its odd that I could get 1070 THE FAN in Virginia very clearly, but I live 30 miles from the tower and cant get it here at night.. this is due to their Highly directional night pattern which ironically is beamed right at Virginia. Im actually probably closer to 40 miles from their tower farm in Zionsville.

It must be about the skywave. I live in Columbus, Ohio now and when I used to be on the air at 84WHAS, we wouldn't get many calls from places like Columbus or Indy, but Detroit, Syracuse, Atlanta, Florida, Texas and elsewhere were pretty common. My first night on the air, I got a call from Mountain View, CA! And we had DX cards from all over the world. We used to have a regular caller on "Metz Here" that was calling from the "Finger Lakes region" of Upstate New York. I was in Auburn and Skaneateles a couple of weeks ago and 84WHAS was loud and clear at night.

WHAS used to have a good day and night signal in Columbus, IN. My dad would place his radio (portable) on WHAS play by play on the coffee table and tune in a snowy UK picture from WLKY (32?) then later WDRB
(?41?).

At some point this changed and I am not sure why. I have difficulty even hearing it these days when we visit Columbus. And I would at least listen to Rush. Processing changes signal to noise. The change was great though.

I pick up WHAS in Rochester,IN very well at night. I listen on an Icom 706MKIIG amateur radio and have a wire delta loop antenna supported by three towers at 50 feet above ground level.
