Question about WJJZ on 106.1 and 97.5 FM

I am curious about the time frame of the format flips on 106.1 and 97.5 FM. When did 106.1 drop smooth jazz and when did it return to 97.5 FM. Philadelphia listeners may not be aware that today CD101.9 in NYC dropped smooth jazz in favor of a rock format. There is speculation that another NYC station could pick up the smooth jazz format.

From what I hear JJZ is not doing too well and their spots are not big on cash. Believe it, if 106.1 did not flip 97.5 would be some hot talk, oldies or country by now....but GM got a big break with the 106.1 flip they did not have to search for a format.
 
WJJZ 106.1 went off the air in August of 2006. it came back on 97.5 in mid-November 2006. with the way the new WJJZ's numbers look and with one of the format's pioneers in New York City going off the air today after 20 years, i think it's just a matter of time before greater media gives up on smooth jazz. i really think smooth jazz should consider becoming an AM format where it could be successful among the older crowd. Cincinnati, Ohio and Lacona, NH have smooth jazz AM stations. if WJJZ goes off the air, some little AM station should keep the flame alive like 1340 or 1480.
 
i dont think JJZ is going anywhere...and even if they did, what would become of 97.5
 
97.5 is not really making it cash-wise due to the signal. They do not have nearly the reach 106.1 had, thus fewer listeners and the resultant less ad sales.

A lot of us smooth jazz fans would love to listen to them, but we can't because we simply cannot hear them.
 
I dunno, the signal reaches the core audiance, the inner city, same as 103.9 and 107.9, their signal is great where it counts...as for a bad signal wrff has a horrible signal compared to all the other fm's and since the new comcast building went up it kinda back feeds mmrs signal so going south of cc for 4 or 5 miles mmr spatters all over wrff in the car and does the same to ysp, I dont listen to much else do I dont know if mmr interferes with them...
 
Smooth Jazz is primarily a suburban format that tries to also appeal to urbanites with the heavy addition of R&B vocals. It needs to reach the 'burbs, like Wilmington. One of the beauties of the format is that it does appeal to both. I work with many smooth jazz fans were loved the old WJJZ but can not hear the new version for the ride to and from work because it fades out. We can hear it fine in the office near the airport, but during the critical AM and PM drive times, its no-go.
 
I agree with WTUX that smooth jazz appeals to the suburban audience and the city audience. 97.5's signal loses the Wilmington market as it isn't very strong here as the 106.1 signal was. There probably are other suburban areas in PA and NJ that can't get the new WJJZ either as I realize a Philly station isn't really interested in pulling in Wilmington audiences in terms of their Philly market ratings, but there a number of Philly stations that are at the top of the Wilmington market ratings and make money here as well as in Philly.

i dont know... 104.5 is the strongest philly station up my way...

and as for 97.5, thats barely even faintly in, its weak...infact i got 97 .5 better up here when it was in trenton. if its signal was better, they'd have more listeners... it SHOULD be ok as long as it reaches reading and allentown...but i doubt it covers reading like the other ones do, because im not far from reading
 
As long as BA is in the mix with the smooth jazz network, smooth jazz doesn't have a chance in philly. There is just no reason to insult the listeners intelligence thinking that what they're putting out there is smooth jazz. What they're getting is a day full of v/t jocks with a/c music so they won't tick off the p1's and to appease those that want to hear jazz artists will get what they think they want to hear.

To sum it all up, your smooth jazz station is not your station like they try to brainwash you with, it's BA's station and they will continue to dictate what you like. It's sad but true, cheap wins out everytime. You know, young Country would sound good at 97.5, at least they'd be honest and wouldn't lie to the listeners. You know exactly what you're gonna get.
