Question about WODS

I am a frequent poster on the Providence Board.I was wondering because I don't get a chance to listen to WODS.I was wondering if WODS is playing 80's yet.
B101 in Providence has added quite a few hit's from Gennesis and John Cougar Melloncamp in the past week and I'm sure more will be added.
Has WODS broke into the Video music era yet or are these songs bassically on WROR still?

I'm pretty sure WODS only plays 80s songs by 60s/70s artists. Songs like Aretha Franklin - Freeway of Love, Beach Boys - Kokomo, and Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing.

Not to mention Roy Orbison's late 80's hit "You Got It" from his last album, in frequent rotation.

They also play some 80's tunes that have a retro oldies "sound", such as "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel, which sounds like a cross between an early 60's Phil Spector production and a Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons oldie (though I'd much rather hear the genuine articles).

Recently ODS played a history of rock and roll show, and a bunch of 80's songs showed up. I almost had a heart attack when I heard Van Halen on the oldies station. I'm definitely not ready to be old! When I heard U2 I realized they must be doing a special.

But it may not be too long until WODS-103.3 (if they're still "oldies" by that time and have not been "Jack"-ed) plays a lot of 1980's hits, as well as hits from 1975 to 1979 with pre-1975 music eliminated altogether from it's playlist.

While Infinity may make such a move to try to keep WODS' listeners within the prime 25-54 demographic, I feel such a change could backfire.

And despite Entercom having it's "Jack"-type format "Mike" on the air in the Boston area, I still think it's possible that WODS could be flipped to "Jack" sometime this Fall.

I know that many of you guys hate speculation, but...

Infinity has two stations that stick out from the Oldies pack; being WODS here in Boston and WOMC 104.3 in Detroit. Both of these stations do quite well in the billing department as I've heard, but it's true, that demo is aging. Unless Infinity can somehow find a way to get younger audiences, the genre will be moving to the AM dial in due time.

The same audience who turns to 103.3 for The Supremes isn't likely to be huge fans of Van Halen's "Jump". It's impossible to classify any Van Halen as an "Oldie" in my opinion, maybe they can. Somehow I don't see that happening. I don't see the genre coming to a close as early as this Fall though; there must be at least a few years of life in 103.3 and WOMC.

But, I'm with you on the Jack. I can't really get the feeling that Mike will be much of a success. After listening to three other Jack FMs, there is just something to Jack that Mike is lacking. Mike's music variety could definately use a little work, but Mike's presentation is also lacking. Boston is definately a rock-friendly city, and in my opinion, a Jack (potentially 98.5, 103.3 or 104.1) could easily blow Mike out of the water, and take aim at WBOS and WROR.

The ratings out today aren't all that favorable for Infinity's 104.3 Jack FM/Chicago and 101.1 Jack FM/New York, but 93.1 Jack FM in Los Angeles is up. Perhaps this indicates that Jack is not a great replacement for oldies stations, but works for classic rockers? Either way, if I were Infinity, and I planned to put a Jack in Boston eventually, then now would be a great time before Mike picks some steam (and listeners).

(and to the last poster: Van Halen is no where near the shock I had when I heard WCRB playing Irene Cara's "Flashdance". Then I realized that it was the 4th of July, and it was just the simulcast to the WCVB coverage. Those were the days...)

That was a syndicated show, not produced locally by WODS.

It sounded like one of those "give the airstaff the holiday weekend off" deals.

Don't forget about WOGL Philadelphia and KOOL Phoenix. Both Infinity oldies stations post excellent numbers and bill well. Check out the latest ratings from both markets. WODS still has more company in the corporate stable than you may think. And, it has done pretty well too.

Let's not be in a rush to "Jack" any more Infinity stations. A recent drive through the New York area represented the first time that my radio has EVER spent less than 5 minutes on 101.1 while within range of CBS-FM. It's truly a boring station now.
Edited by BRNout on 08/23/05 02:01 AM.

I still like the idea of Jacking it up (Add the jack tunes but keep the 60s 70s oldies TOO and the announcers.

Mike seems to be a wee but repetive in its style and dosen't play as many Star tunes as in the past. Boston is definatly open to a blend of rock and dance music on the same station.

Oldies 1033's playlist is WAY TOO TIGHT! You ask for abba you get Dancing Queen (and NOTHING else, ecept on Sunday night)

It seems like all that get played generally are songs from the current Freedom 400.
20 years 400 songs that's like 20 songs a year on average. (25 if you cut 60-63)

Re: The future of WODS

Oldies is perhaps the one format that NEEDS to have a huge music library.

Certainly more titles than most formats.
