question about WWAX, 92.1 fm in Duluth

It would appear they call themselves the Beat.
What is their format? They have no website but are registered as CHR.
 
They don't lean on R&B whatsoever it's a straight up Adult CHR - one of two in a market that hasn't had a CHR in over a decade - the name is a really odd choice for a station that focuses on Rob Thomas & Nickelback. The B-e-a-t name may have been chosen to confuse listeners / diary responders because the primary competitor to their mothership station at the time they signed on was called the B-e-a-r. It's the only explanation anyone could think of for why they'd give that kind of a name to a Hot AC/Adult Hits station. ???
 
It will be a great thing for that market when these two stations decide to actually pick a format and become focused.

There are so many stations in that market without actual formats, where to begin....
 
Great post by Dr. Radio and right on all counts.

Time will tell if WWAX stays with its hybrid of CHR and Rhythmic CHR (doubtful if past history is any indication) but for the time being it sure is nice that current popular music is actually represented on the airwaves in Duluth, MN.
 
They're a fairly typical CHR station. They play a combination of rock and rap / R & B. More or less what's on the charts. I don't like it.

Good post doctorradio, but you would have to admit that there is certainly a very good reason why the anti-formats aren't heard in other markets. Variety Hits is essentially a new spin on Classic Hits and Hot AC, and plays popular stuff. There's a reason why there are almost no commercial FMs in America that consistently play B-sides from unknown artists.
 
92.1 plays quite a bit of dance: Pink remix, Cascada, Sarah Atereth, Enur "Calabria," new Rhiana dance track, others.

This station and the historical CHR in that market ( the old 102.5 KZIO ) have a nice history of being dance-friendly. Maybe it's because they're so close to Canada? Whatever the reason it's nice to see.
 
Looks like WWAX switched over to "Lite 92.1", Mainstream A/C format. Wow! "92.1 the Beat", "Kiss 92.1" was a Duluth institution for younger people (did the station descend from KZIO 102.5?). It's strange that we how we no longer have a CHR, though 107.7 is close enough for many.
 
We'll see if Mix backs off of the rhythmic trax now that they have no competition for females under 50 lol, but as of now they're sounding pretty good. The Beat had a near-perfect CHR playlist with a rhythmic lean for a lot of its run in the last year and it wasn't able to even make a dent in Mix's #s. It's 92.1's own fault - they had a lock on the market a few years ago but took their eye off the ball and it cost them in the end.

Lack of ratings.
 
why were the ratings so low? the beat was the only station that played somewhat new hip hop. now i'm forced to listen to mix 108. the most hip hop song on that station is probably crank dat soulja boy. when i flip through stations, there are a ton of country and classic rock channels. i thought duluth was a city! they should at least have an all rock channel and an all hip hop channel. maybe even some house/techno stuff. then maybe ratings would go up. when they blend the genres, people dont want to stay and listen, they turn stations. jammin out to snoop dogg and e-40 and then all of a sudden hear some nickelback...that aint cool.
 
Forced to listen to Mix 108? OMG. A station that isn't streaming is a godsend my dear. I would be thankful it's even there on the air regularly. I haven't heard that station since it was called "The Point." And all you 20 repliers should have replied to my thread at the top of this board!~
 
It's a shame that 92.1 was kneejerked around for so long. The opportunity was there from the moment 102.5 dropped the KZIO call letters back in the 90s for them to pick up the ball and run with it as a true CHR but there was never a time in that whole period where the station actually aired a Mainstream CHR format with all of the proper CHR elements in place (including promotions, music, imaging, live air presence, and much more).

Now the market is stuck with a Hot AC/CHR hybrid as the only place for females from 12-50 to go. Weird. Watch Mix's #s go thru the roof for the Spring '08 book though.
