Question: Do women really want a "news" station?

If we generalize.....is the average female New Yorker going to hit the 101.9 button when she's in the car? Do women want, and seek out, news/information on the radio?
Is there research which suggests women want a "news lite" format like 101.9?
Do you really believe Randy Michaels has anything whatsoever to do with this "product?"

Yeah! What woman wants "information?" Everything she needs to know about is in the kitchen!

[/sarcasm]

You've gotta be kidding me. THIS is what you think the problem is? Women don't want information? Do you have any evidence to back up such an ignorant concept?

Oh, so there are no women in New York's offices yet? They're all still at home, having kids, dusting the furniture, and listening to Delilah on Lite? I'd have thought Sharia law would have been lifted there by now.

Most news/talk numbers I've seen are predominately male.
I'm not making a statement. I'm asking a question.
Well.....except the last question. I give Randy Michaels more credit.....maybe more than he deserves.
Does 101.9 stereotype women (the demo they say they want) with it's presentation? It would seem to be much more lifestyle and entertainment based than a typical radio news operation.

I think the point of this post isn't that women don't want news... it's do they want this "version" of news, with the inane pitter patter between stories, loose presentation and generally light stories. Do educated, mature women consider the Kardashians news when there are much bigger things going on in the region (flooding) the nation (jobs speech, republican debate, 9/11 anniversary) and world (pick your troubled region, mideast, European economy etc. etc.)? That is the question that the answer to remains to be seen.

With 2 all news stations in the market already, you can't say there isn't a station to get the news from. Will this brand of news work?

Whether it's a man or woman, I think that 101.9 is yet another sign of the dumbing down of America. Why would we want any type of serious or real presentation when it can all be cutsey and funny.

The best thing that 101.9 has going for it are the traffic reports. Much more comprehensive than either 880 or 1010.

Don't blame the media for the choices people make. People are responsible for the choices they make, and the media they use. If they can't find what they want on OTA radio, there are lots of places for them to go.

The fact is that the traditional news presentation already exists in NYC. The traditional talk presentation exists. Just about every music format that can attract advertising dollars already exists. The purpose here is to see if there's a niche this station can fill that will be large enough to sustain it. We'll see if it does. But just because some people don't like it doesn't mean it can't succeed.

When I listen to 101.9 it reminds me of the "Today Show". (without the pictures.)
That approach seems to work well for NBC...at least in the morning.

So is there serious research behind the New York/Chicago Merlin approach or is this someone's "gut" approach? (This is a question.....not a statement.)
Is there research which indicates women generally prefer, for lack of a all encompassing word, "lite" news which focuses more on entertainment and lifestyle?
I'm simply asking questions. Note the generous use of QUESTION MARKS in my posts.
Ask my ex wife. She will tell you I know nothing about women.........

And those traffic reports take up a lot of time...which lessens the pressure on the news-gathering organization to find important stories to deliver...like methods to extend the freshness date of stale bread.

Works so well for them, it's expanded to, what, five hours a day now? ::)

I'm 36 and I don't want a "News" station and either do any of my suburban mom friends. News is depressing. We prefer music that picks us up :-*
