question for bigger market stations

Hi All!

I have a question for those of you that work or live in the bigger markets(i.e. milwaukee, green bay, eau claire, ect). Do any radio stations carry the entire WIAA State High School Tournaments for Football, Basketball, or Hockey? Also, do any stations cover local teams during the regular season?

The reason I ask, is the WIAA is again trying to start a radio Network for the championship games on an exclusive basis. They are working with Clear Channel and Learfield on this. In the end, if our station doesnt carry the network, and our local team gets to the state tournament,we wont be able to cover it.

The WIAA is having a forum on this at their offices on April 12th starting at 1pm. According to a fax from the WIAA(which they didnt send to me, I got it from another station)if your from a radio station, you have until Friday to rsvp at 608-663-7235. So please respond here your thoughts on this!

Thanks!

WIAA Network...No.

Do you think people in Racine care about hearing a game between Hurley vs Spooner? I (and others) talked about this with Todd Clark of the WIAA last season with this idea came up. There was so much opposition to this plan, it was dropped. I cannot imagine any radio giving up air time to broadcast games of zero interest to their listeners.

With all respect to Clear Channel, Learfield and the WIAA, the smaller local stations know how to cover high school basketball and football. We know the teams, the players, the coaches and the history...and they know us, the broadcasters.

Most of us do very well selling advertising to local businesses. We don't need any network regional ads eating up valuable time, or worse, having our ad dollars stolen.

As the plan was last time, local stations would be "forced" to carry all high school sports. Unacceptable.

High school sports is a mainstay and valuable asset of smaller, local (and for the most part) AM radio stations. Let's keep it that way. Nothing is broke...so let's not tinker with it.

I wonder if Radio Disney might be interested.....

Why? Again, of what interest is Huley vs Spooner to listeners of Radio Disney in Milwaukee?

Re: WIAA Network...No.

I totall agree Don. But Todd Clarks response is that they do it on TV and it works, so it would work for radio, because EVERYONE is a high school sports fan and the tournaments DESERVE coverage in the bigger markets.(I wish I had some of what he was smoking). Thats my question, did ANY Clear Channel Station in Milwaukee carry any of the tournament, or high school games in the regular season for that matter?

MMM-K, perhaps things have changed, but when I was in high school, we listened or watched as many of the tournament games as we could. Disney being geared more towards kids (granted YOUNGER kids) I thought it **MIGHT** have a fit.

Guess people just dont care anymore.
