Question for CabRadio

I have no intentions of doing this, but this question has been on my mind for a few months. Why I didn't ask you when I did this with you is beyond me.

If a person signs a time brokerage contract with a station and the contract says he gets the air time starting on October 1 can he go out 3 weeks before to try to get sponsors for his show or his format as long as he tells the sponsors he's not coming on the air until October 1?

Yes. Most brokers do this. But keep in mind that most stations won't let you out of the contract just because you couldn't line up sponsors. Best bet is to shop for clients BEFORE signing the contract. That way you will know that at least your first month is covered. Sometimes you can get a clause that allows you to exit the contract with 1 or 2 weeks notice (most infomercials do this), and at the most you will have to go with 4 weeks notice. Try to get a contract that lasts only as long as you know you can pay for, like a month to month. If the station is selling out of time this will be hard to do. Also, you risk losing your slot to a higher bidder. You can also ask for a "first right of refusal", meaning if the station gets a higher bidder, the station allows you to match or beat that offer before the station sells the slot out from under you. <P ID="signature">______________
