Question for Collectors with BIG Collections

Good evening all!

I've been trading for about a year and a half now, slowing building up a small collection of airchecks from the 60s and early 70s. I've been very appreciative that a lot of people have been kind and traded with me when I probably didn't have too much that was of interest to them. All told, my collection is now at about 50 or so airchecks.

My question: For those of you with literally thousands of airchecks, how did you do it? Did you do huge trades? Tons of small ones? Did you take a second mortgage and purchase big lots of airchecks? Stumble upon a buried treasure chest of reel-to-reels? Blackmail the staff of WABC?

best,
Eric

I record a lot on my own. Whenever I travel, I tend to aircheck the whole market where I stay. Also, I don't bother with scoping... never seen the point of jock talk without the music... so I don't spend much time editing anything. The sizes of my trades have varied from one to twenty airchecks, but they might average 4-6 cassettes or 3-4 MDs.

My collection started out small, but grew over the years. I now have around 4600 airchecks.

Eric,

I've been trading since 1996, and for the most part, I got all mine from "tons of small ones". Most of my trades have been 4 tapes or less. I have traded with many of the same guys over and over, but almost always in small batches.

I haven't seen your name until recently, but once you get linked from other people's sites, you will probably find that a lot of people come to you. There have been times where I have had 4 or more unknown people contact me within a single week.

But like Skim, I also have amassed a lot on my own as well.

I started trading in 2002 and have amassed about 1400 airchecks. I started out with about 20 tapes that I recorded myself starting back in about 1987. Out of those 20 tapes only two were recorded before 1991. Most were recorded after 2001. I've had one lucky find of about 6 or 7 91X (XETRA 91.1 Tijuana/SD,CA.)tapes at a local garage sale, these were all recorded between 86'-89'. What was cool about it was the two tapes I recorded myself before 91' were 91X in San Diego.

To make a long story short I've been trading with the guys who frequent this board for the past three years and recording lot's of local airchecks and always when traveling.

I pretty much trade for current stuff. Occasionally I'll see an older aircheck in someones collection that I trade for as well.

All the guys on here have been very good to me as far as trading and I appreciate it very much.

Good luck and if you want anything from Seattle contact me at [email protected]

1400 Mike? Wow. I remember those days when you had 20, and were new. You've come a long way!

We appreciate you too Mike - you are one of the best!

Hi..I have close to 120 airchecks...and it keeps growing. I could probaly program KMET and KLOS in L.A as I have many.

I've traded several times with Eric, and been very happy with his quality and turn around time. He's reliable, and always stays in touch!

I've been collecting airchecks since 1976, and I have NO clue how many I actually have. If it wasn't for my site, I would have no idea what my collection consisted of. There was no way I was going to publish a list, so building a site was the easiest thing to do.

I am constantly hearing from "newbies" wanting to trade, and being the wonderful guy that I am :) I've never refused a trade. I think I've traded with everyone on this board at one time or another, and been happy with them all.

If you all saw the amount of tapes and CD's sitting in front of me now, your jaws would drop. I have at least 400-500 of them that I have NOT listened to, or put on my site yet. I prefer to get CD's these days so I can listen in the car, since I don't have a cassette deck in there. Hopefully the next new vehicle will.

I usually will do a 6 tape or CD trade, larger if there are really some great things I want to get from the other person.

The other way to get "old" airchecks is to make friends with some of the "heritage" jocks in your market, and ask them for some of their old stuff if they have any. I'm constantly amazed at how many guys have NO airchecks of themselves at all. In fact, I often get emails from many former jocks asking for stuff that I have of them, since they don't.

Happy Trading! Matt

Matt -- are you calling us "old" in a nice way?

My secret? I maintain a huge stock of tape, a good recorder ... and one helluva time machine! :)

I've been collecting airchecks since 1992, but rolled tape on some stations as early as 1978 (age 13), and had maybe two dozen airchecks by '92. That Summer I saw an ad in GOLDMINE magazine from a guy seeking airchecks of Deep South stations, and I answered it. He was interested in my slim pickins, and we did a trade. I then solicited airchecks in POPULAR COMMUNICATIONS mag, which resulted in my striking up regular trades with a couple of folks through much of the '90s.

In addition, I have bought a handful of airchecks. Truly a last resort, though!

Early in 1997 after getting internet service, I put my aircheck list (at the time numbering ~300 tapes) online. From there it mushroomed. Soon it got to where people began approaching ME for trades, instead of the other way around!

Amidst all this, I came across a major bonanza of old Alabama radio airchecks -- literally mildew-covered reels containing some first-rate top-40 stations from Montgomery in the late '60s/early '70s.

I've since retreated into a "niche" of sorts - specializing in vintage Deep South airchecks. Few others were interested, so why not? Today my collection numbers around 1,000 .... cassettes and CD combined. Actual number of airchecks, of course, is more than that - a good number, alas, are scoped.

My advice would be to keep maintaining an online list, and make yourself known. Also consider making a "tapeable stations list" page on your site ... if you live in an area where there's some good radio being made, you shouldn't have any problems building a good collection through trades with people interested in airchecks of stations in your neighborhood.

Meanwhile, I'll take a look at your list and see if anything interests me! Check out my site (http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/newbonham/835/airchecks/main.htm) -- there's also a link to it on the left column under "traders", just look for Russell Wells.

Best of luck in your trades! May you soon run out of room for storage! [g]

--Russell in Savannah, Ga.

Shameless self-plug: I'm always interested in trading to obtain vintage Southeastern tapes; however, I have very little interest in current airchecks -- unless it's a homegrown, live and locally-programmed station, especially if it's an AM. I seek those out, regardless of region!

Pat, we ARE old! I don't know if I would call you "heritage" though!
______________

These days, if you can stay on a station for more than a book,
you can be considered "heritage".....

It is amazing how my aircheck collection has grown. It just grows by itself, so it seems. I don't have to do anything.

Once I found a cassette tape of some station in Windsor, Ontario recorded in 1988. I found the tape when cleaning out an apartment here in Austin. The station was below 92FM and played Progressive Rock.

That is about the strangest tape I ever found.

Perhaps it is 88.7, whatever 89X was before it was 89X

Peppertree, I think you sent me that in one of our trades...i'd have to go look for the tape, but I'm pretty sure that's one you sent me, and if I'm not mistaken, it was for some of the 91X tapes I have...

That sounds intriguing. I think I'll try to get that one next time. :)

Like most everyone here, I started out recording tapes myself. The internet helped me connect with other collectors. I don't trade often anymore...I would estimate I have a few hundred tapes and CDs (many duplicate copies of the same aircheck on tape and CD).
______________

I don't know how many airchecks I have.
I can guess and say that between the cd's I recorded for myself, and the cd's I got from you guys, i have about 220 or so?
The cassettes are in a bag, and I have yet to organize those, I have no idea how many cassettes I have.
I also do not have a limit on trades. I've sent out from two to 12 cassettes on a trade, and from like two to 20 cd's.
(These all Audio cd's, not mp3.)
Everyone I've traded with thus far is honest and good.

You are correct, I did send it to you. And it was A-OK in every way. Audio etc.
