Question for DG

I read the Daily Toreador article: http://media.www.dailytoreador.com/...Air.With.Different.Format-3748384-page3.shtml

The article implies that you are going to bring alternative music back on the airwaves in a year. In the first paragraph it says, "listeners can expect to wait at least a year to hear alternative music and student voices on 88.1 FM."

I know you have talked about bringing students on the air but I do not remember you saying anything about alternative coming back.

Just kind of curious. Good luck again with the frequency. If there is anything I can do to help, do not hesitate to ask :)

I didn't. In fact, I told her specifically that we didn't have the music for Alternative and were not likely to.

I also told her that student-run didn't necessarily mean "Alternative format".

Oh well, at least she spelled my name right....

Yeah, we're working on that. Not exactly sure where the problem lies, but suspect it's either the brand new processor recently purchased, or maybe a problem with the exciter.

The engineer said he'd noticed the right channel had problems before Student Media pulled the plug and had incorrectly assumed it was related to the music the kids were playing- something about how they were mixing it and ripping it into the system. Now that we have different programming altogether, he said it's got to be one of the boxes in the air chain.

The STL we're using for it is obsolete and doesn't even generate the composite output needed for the exciter. And I'm having to use a surplus Orban we had been using for web streaming as a limiter on the STL head-end to keep from banging it too much.

I'd like to get some additional gain out of it, but with all that I have kludged together to make it work, I doubt the STL could handle it. Most of the old gear we inherited is analog, which is ok, but our studio is 98% digital, and therein lies most of the issue.

I've received lots of positive feedback thus far, which honestly surprises me- I really wasn't expecting much if any audience this early with it.

I'm working with a Tech professor to try and get a new website up for KTXT, hopefully we'll have that up soon.

I'll be trying to swap out the processor next week in an attempt to localize where that right channel issue is happening.

It will get better, but will take some time....

:)

A late shout-out to BigVoiceGuy:

We changed the processing (and will likely continue to play with it) on KTXT and switched from analog on the STL to digital. That appears to have given us several dB of gain on the audio and also cleaned up the right channel.

I'd appreciate any technical comments about 88.1 right now. My listening is primarily during the day, but I'm seeking some input about the music on during evenings and overnights.

Thanks!

Okay, I've peaked in periodically, and it does sound better. Also, I like the BBC News programming, it offers a nice alternative (uh oh, I said the "a" word).

Seriously, sounds good. The only thing I would say is the sound is still a little tinny, a little like an internet stream, but I don't know if that's because of the method of network feed delivery that is being used. I know that whenever you utilize a satellite feed for sound, you get that same kind of pixilation you find in say an XM/Sirius channel audio.

It's the soundcard on the PC. We're running the audio through an old Dell desktop PC and what you hear is coming through the crappy default soundcard that came with the PC.

I spent a fortune on connectors getting everything from our pro-end sat receivers to mate down to a 1/8" stereo plug for the stupid sound card input.

We're looking to upgrade that card ASAP- one that will have AES/EBU output as well as XLR connectors.

Oh, and I forgot to mention- I'm running the audio output from the soundcard through an old Sony DAT player and using that for the A to D conversion for our studio chain.

I'm amazed it sounds as good as it does considering the duct-tape/chewing gum/bailing wire setup we're using on it...

I have to say... I truly enjoy the stations music. I really don't care for BBC... just because it comes across as ANTI-AMERICA... but whatever on that. However, they (BBC) shouldn't run the same stories over. For two days I heard some dumbass story about some woman in Africa who got to watch Michael Jackson's monkey. It wasn't news worthy the first time... yet they ran it again the next day.

However... minus BBC for the most part... I LOVE the station.
