I actually "Channel" him;) Mr. Murrow not George. Mr. Murrow is please but feels that Humphrey Bogart would have been more suitable if he were still on the earth and not with him.

Are Chesterfields still 27¢ a pack?

Sorry, boys, no points this round. Clooney is portraying Fred Friendy, not Mr. Murrow. Not a match, the board goes back.

Didn't HBO do a movie about him back in the 80's? The guy who played the Captain on Hill Street Blues (can't rememberer his name)played the lead.

Daniel J.Travanti did indeed played ERM in "Murrow".It caused a little controversey then with CBS claiming it did not accurately portray him. Walter Cronkhite refused to watch it,but in retrospect Cronkhite didnot like Murrow and vice versa. Murrow was very ticked off when Cronkhite was lead anchor for the 1956 Presidential election coverage. Murrow's last great work for CBS was about the plight of migrant farm workers called "Harvest of Shame" on the "CBS REPORTS" monthly documentary series. JFK saw it and after being elected asked Murrow to head the Voice of America.

Clooney does not play Murrow ... or murrow

I'm howlin' with laughter, but ...

Edward R. Murrow is NOT played by George Clooney who also directed the film.

Clooney portrays Fred Friendly then president of CBS News. He gained quite a bit of weight to play the part.

David Strathairn plays Murrow.

The Real Edward R. Murrow

Edward R. Murrow, born Egbert Roscoe Murrow, headed the United States Information Agency which oversees the Voice of America.

Travanti also was criticized for his portrayal in the made-for-TV movie because Travanti's voice obviously did not match Murrow's.

Ironically, Travanti was an alcoholic in real life who sought treatment much like the character he played so well on "Hill Street Blues".

A small plaque remains in the headquarters of CBS in New York with the inscription: "He set standards of excellence of that remain unsurpassed."

Murrow made more than 5,000 broadcast during his 25-year career.

Like Peter Jennings, he died of lung cancer after a lifetime of chain smoking on April 27, 1965 -- two days after his 57th birthday -- and 40 years ago this year.

Ah, thank you for recognizing that. Letterman says it occasionally, but that's the original source.
