Question For J. Street

OK, Mr. Street. I've read your posts and you seem to know everything. Here's a serious question for you.

Question: How come your station "The Peak" (which is as good or better than WTFM), has failed to take any of WTFM numbers? None! You've had over a year, what's your answer?

If anyone else would like to answer, I'd love to read them.

The Peak is MY station? haha that's very interesting. I'd love to own my own radio station but unfortunately I do not. Don't own it, don't manage it, don't program it, don't promote it, don't sell the advertising for it, don't clean the floors there, don't take wipes to the peak mic, don't date dee stevens, don't drink beer with todd pettengill, you get the picture. Seems that you've been misled somewhere rat... and also I don't "know everything." I don't know anything that anyone else who studies music charts and trends, is familiar with tricities' radio stations and their reach and ratings wouldn't know. As for The Peak and their ratings, that's certainly not a question for me. Why don't you give them a call and ask them? But I will give you an assumption/opinion. As much as us radio people would love to not believe this, listening habits are very hard, if not impossible to break. WTFM has been around for a long time. Furthermore, The Peak doesn't have nearly the reach of WTFM. Paying any attention to ratings is pointless unless you know the watts they're working with. I would say The Peak v. WTFM is the same scenario as the new EAGLE v. WGOC. I assume the reason you wanted to come after me is because of your post singing the EAGLE's praises and mine in opposition. Didn't mean to step on any toes. I'm sure the EAGLE will do fine in Rogersville, but it simply doesn't reach here well enough. Get back to me, and the Peak for that matter when the EAGLE takes any of WGOC's numbers.

Oh and in addition, it's "J-Street," not "J. Street" or "Mr. Street"

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight's main event. In the blue corner wearing the white Nextel t-shirt obtained from the station swag closet is Radio Rat. He weighs in at 278 lbs and stands 5'7". And in the red corner, standing 5'9" tall and weighing in at 137 lbs, it's J-Street. J-Street is wearing the Leann Rimes t-shirt he got free from the Funfest give away basket. Both of these juggernauts are looking for their first win in the ring, and we'll start round one right after the singing of our national anthem, "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood.

"From the shores of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee" (crowd pees itself with excitement for having heard the name of their state canonized in song)
"From the coast of Carolina, From New York (scattered boos) to L.A.
I'm proud to be an American soul and I'll stand here now and say..."
"I'm glad I wrote this freakin' song, cause without it I'd be through,
And I hope that I've been able to sell at least three copies to you!"

Alright sports fans, with our National Anthem out of the way, it's time for the tale of the tape, brought to you by Spotless Carpet Cleaners, s-p-o-t-l-e-s-s, Spotless is the very best.....Carpet Cleaners. Our challenger, Radio Rat is 37 years old and hails from the great burg of Cash Hollow. His record is 0-5-2. His reach is 5,000 watts and he favors his right wing.
Our champion, J-street, is 17 and works for his high-school A-V club. His record is an impressive 0-9-4 and he leads with his right but tends to lean left.
It's time now for the first round bell...<ding>, and we're under way.
Radio Rat comes out swinging early with a roundhouse "you think you know everything" and it connects. J-street answers back with a devastating "I study the market/You spelled my name wrong" one-two combination. And now both fighters have retired to their corners for a smoke and to forage for free food from the station fridge. And the referee is counting both of these great fighters out. 7....8....9....10! And it's over, another draw for both of these brave contenders. We've witnessed an amazing display of carnage here today with both of these valiant warriors giving all they had. Join us next week when Maddog 1964 takes on all comers in a "Back in the good old days when we played vinyl" steel cage match. BE there!!

My apology's J-Street. I'm not coming after you to be cruel, I'm just trying to have a good old radio debate. I was under the impression you were the
J-Street I heard on The Peak Saturday at 1pm, so I figured you had some incite.

You think Watts are a factor in radio. In some cases you're right, but The Peak covers the market beautifully. Class A or not, I can get them everywhere. I think you sell Class A stations short.

Now, I agree with you about listening habits, They're hard to break. I think The Peak still has a shot at stripping a point or two from WTFM.

As for the miss spelling of your name, it's noted. I will never spell it wrong again.

Forums are fun.

Well done SlopJockey. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your analysis of the bout, but where is Michael Buffer? You can't have a world-class event without Michael Buffer, or at least the guy from the AllState commercials, or maybe the Geico Gecko. Hell, we'll just get that Bud guy from 'QUT to announce it.

RadioRat, go back and read my response closer. I said what I DIDN'T do on The Peak. I never said what I do, if anything. But honestly, that doesn't change the rest of what I said, low man on the totem pole here, not the best person to ask. I also hope the Peak can strip some of WTFM's numbers, makes things more interesting. I also hope someone can strip WXBQ's numbers. WIVK seems to be doing a pretty good job and they're not even in our market. Someone stated in another post that in this market, you could play 3 minutes of country music followed by 3 minutes of tone and be #1 in this market. I totally agree with that. The habit thing also comes into play, if you follow WXBQ back through it's history, call letter changes, etc, you'll find it's the original WOPI. That's an 80 year old station! They played Jimmie Rodgers when he was in Bristol in 1927. The interesting thing in this market will be if anyone can ever truly compete with WXBQ. It will take a powerful FM station with lots of reach and programming/promotion talent, not to mention $$$.

Don't know how I got off on that tangent, but point being... WGOC has it's own listener base apart from WXBQ, The EAGLE will do well in it's area but I don't believe it will reach here to alter WXBQ or WGOC's numbers. As far as the watts argument, I said what I did about it BEFORE I went back and read your conversations with Pratte4Life. Those were pretty intense. Would be a good bout following the MadDog mele.

Look - What this market needs is a 100,000 watt "24-7 Fart Sound format". I've heard that this blossoming format has done great in other parts of the country. If anybody ever takes down XBQ, it'll be the one. Winning in radio is all about relating to your audience. And who can't relate to a never ending "Spider Bark"? To be honest, today's cuntry music sounds pretty similar anyway. And yes, SlopJockey...Great commentary. I was disappointed that it ended. I wanted more.

The Peak

I think "The Peak" is a fairly good station for what it is. I havent' lived in the Tri-Cities in a while now, but I remember listening to it.

The problem with formats like "The Peak," is that they usually cannot have high time spent listening. The reason is that are way too many types of music being played. Now, I am basing this on a while ago, so things may have changed.

I never did like their imaging on their radio station or their voiceover guy. Again, things may have changed since the last time I had a chance to listen.

"The Peak" will more than likely never beat WTFM. That station has been there a long time, and even though I don't personally like TFM, I believe listeners are very loyal to them.

Still want to see "The Peak" beat ELECTRIC. Hehe!

Heard the Peak when I was in the Tri-Cities a few weeks back. What they really need is a Stevie B......

Stevie B..What happen to you anyway! You were wonderful on the air!

Radio Rat....Double D...... Do you really think that HOT was even a contender in the radio wars? REALLY...????

Now you have THE EAGLE and are seriously thinking it could do anything to the numbers? If you honestly feel your station is any sort of Threat to any station you should get out of Radio and study to be something else that maybe wouldn't make you use a Brain! Allen is a total loser who had TFM snowed for way too long. He has wasted his money buying that station and should just put it in his bathroom at home and have you jock it full time. Why don't you have Jocks?

I feel sorry for You Guys and the Time you are wasting trying to convience yourself and others that THE EAGLE is even a REAL STATION!

Give it and Go back up North and start a station for Santa.

When the station was owned by the Funeral Home they had it worked out where the signal was somewhat better than what it is now. As for now, Hawkins County and West Sullivan County is all they can think about serving because that's as far as the signal goes. Unless, of course, Allen Snead has some surefire plan for upping the power that he stole from some other station. That's where most of his consulting ideas came from...somewhere else.

Well I guess I'll get slammed here. Alan Sneed is a great consultant. I worked with him for several years and I learned alot about programming from him. He is/was one of the top consultants for Radio One. Even though he is no longer associated with our company I still respect his ideas. I think the Eagle will show good numbers in it's ADI, especially in 18 +.

You were right ...You are now going to get slammed! Alan Sneed was no consultant. When and what changes did he bring to WTFM? The numbers went up after he left.
He flew in here once every few months and played MR. SUPER CONSULTANT. His only talent and "IN" with Radio One was his EX-WIFE. With his wife gone is he is now gone. If you think Allen Sneed is a smart Consultant and knows radio why the heck did he spend any amount of money on WEYE? When he first bought it.....Minnie Me ( Double D ) and Allen went around saying how big it was going to be and what a contender in the market it would be ect...what a JOKE! Everyone at WTFM and KROCK laughed the second they bought it and then was saying how BIG it would be! COME ON ......did you really think it would hurt any station's numbers?

I would really go and get a Job as a Clown at a County Fair...You would have more impact on the numbers doing that then running the EAGLE!

Hey there! Thanks for the compliment as well! I got fired from Bristol Broadcasting back in January of 2005. GB couldn't stand that I wasn't going to kiss his butt. He is stuck in 1997 and does not have a clue about how to program a successful radio station! They need to have Reed programming.

Afterwards, me and my wife decided to move back to where we both are originally from, which is in Atlanta, Georgia. I am working for my father in the textile business and my wife is working for my uncle's chemical company. We are doing so much better financially and don't have to worry about moving around, etc.

Thanks for asking! Don't know who you are, but it was nice of you to have the decency enough to ask! Take care!

Stevie "B"

You know me.....the calling card was a very nice jesture and I have never forgotten it! Now...Let's see if you can keep who I am a secret!

Stevie B...good to hear that you're doing well. I worked with you some at Bristol, though I didn't get to know you that well. I was sacked in June of '05, saying they needed a "change." That's when they brought Gunner back in. And, while Gunner thinks I don't like him, he's alright. It's Bristol I had a problem with. And though I rag on Butch from time to time, I honestly don't think it was him that dropped me. I think the reason for that one went a lot higher, if you know what I mean.

Wow HonkyTonk, you're really mad. I feel sorry for you and all that anger. You know, now that we're gone, maybe you should look to the future. I know who you are from your lack of Arbitron knowledge. You haven't learned anything.

Ok, I left in April. That good winter book you had, was mine. We also set you up for that spring book promotion with the cash. I'm proud of WTFM and the air staff, even you Honky. I hope it keeps doing well.

I'm taking a chance with WEYE. We don't need to kill anyone. I'd rather take a chance with WEYE than do the same old thing at WTFM any day. So yes, I think we'll be OK.

By the way, I hate the North. I think I'll stay, thank you for your pity.

That would be a big improvement, Stevie. Formatic consistency for more than one book would also help. Electric could still be a power house in the right hands. If they get the power increase they've applied for, that would be even better because - even though it is not a lot - it would be enough to give them better penetration in buildings and some of the "flakey" parts of their Tri Cities coverage. It wouldn't hurt them in Knoxville either. The problem is, of course, you gotta give people something worth listening to and not screw with the format at the drop of a hat -- or a .1 rating point.

There's been so much good air talent that's been through the doors at BBC in the past few years. The problem is that the people in Bristol don't always know just what they've got --- til it's gone.
