Question For member bturner

Sorry to start a thread about what should be a PM, but the forum software will not allow me to send a PM, since I'm a new member, and this appears to be the only way I'm allowed to communicate this message.

I was reading your post here:

Wow, what great memories Mike. I went to high school across the freeway from Town East Mall.

In fact, I worked for Soundtown Records in Valley View Mall starting in September of '74 and ended up at the Promenade Center store on Coit Road in Richardson before finally getting my first fulltime radio gig in Eagle Pass, Texas in July '78. The first song I played was Surrender by Cheap Trick.

Do you know if Van Halen did an in-store appearance at Soundtown in Valley View prior to their show in Ft Worth, opening for Montrose and Journey? And what was across from Soundtown at Valley View mall?

Thanks, and again my apologies for this awkward thread.

Hi, I worked at Soundtown in Valley View Mall from, I think, September 1974 and likely a year later was moved to the Promenade Center location in Richardson.

Prior to June 1974, I was working in the food court (at the Fish & Chips, next to Morrow's Nut House and either the burger or pizza place) which was the bottom inner ring in Town East Mall).

It would make sense that Val Halen would have made an appearance at the Town East location at Sound Town. Sound Town was hard and heavy on live appearances at that time. Just prior to my employment at Valley Virew, Roger Daltry of The Who signed autographs at the Valley View location. Not lonng after, Gino Vannelli stopped by (I recall him peering through the two-way glass at the crowd, blushing, and saying 'They're all here to see me?' and then saying it was the biggest crowd yet. Ted Nugent showed up at the Preston Center location of Sound Town not much later. The Runaways showed up twice at our store...a favorite for me. At a gathering of all Sound Town employees, a couple Thin Lizzy members joined us and I was among the handful who stepped out back for a smoke (not the filtered stuff) and I even felt terrible for Elvis Costello as a couple of band members at his table next to ours were about to throw punches. The band we were watching (that I don't recall and never made it), known for their lightning fast endings to songs, abruptly ended their song as Elvis screamed to his bandmembers to be heard over the music, saying "Shut the F up". The band on stage looked in his direction and their smiles changed as Elvis blushed and buried his head.

I do not recall exactly what was across from Sound Town. It was on the second level in the wing looking out over the Town East Blvd. entrance closest to the Sears pick up area. It seems there might have been a cafeteria on the end and possibly a clothing or gift shop type of store across from Sound Town.

I was working at Promenade Center's Sound Town when "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen came out. That reminds me, a record rep stopped by one day with a guy with a terrible cold. I began talking to the fellow, not knowing who he was, noting his accent. A few minutes later the rep comes out of the back office and says "I see you met Ray Davies" (of the Kinks), before quickly ushering him back to the car. I was floored. Nice guy but was on a 14 hour day of appearances sick as a dog.

Feel free to try to get in touch.

Thanks much, appreciate it. I remember when Daltry came there. I was one of the throng of people who turned out to see him. He was pushing his solo album.
