Question for news photogs

Why do you continue to get close up shots of the lights on police cruisers? It looked bad with the old style lights, and now that most departments have gone with the LED emergency lights, it looks even worse. Lying in my darkened bedroom watching the 11 o'clock news and your stupid shot of those emergency lights hits the screen, it makes my room look like a Moroccan disco and gives me a headache. I reach for the remote to tune into anything just to get your video off my screen.

Oh, and one more thing, you are shooting video for what is supposed to be a newscast, not MTV. Give up the "way cool moves". You know, the fast zoom ins, holding your camera like you just left a bar, shooting like you have a Steadicam and just use normal shots. If your video looks like it belongs on MTV, I might confuse your station for MTV and change the channel.

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I will back you 100% on this issue. It bothers me to no end everything you mentioned above. It's news, nothing fancy, just give us the video and the story. I don't care if you know how to do "special" shots. You are shooting video for news, not for a movie or music video.

Oh, come on, Scott. You know some of this footage is shot from the "on call" photog, so he probably did just leave the bar to get the footage! ;D

I'd just like to add the "talking heads" shot also be stricken as well. Even if you're not shooting in 16X9, you should be thinking that way, getting the subject and the background. Barely anyone has a 13in TV as their main monitor anymore (although I'm guilty, but I'm also broke). For example: When you're getting a sound bite from UGA Football head coach Mark Richt, we don't need to be able to count his nose hairs (even on a 13in TV)! I mean, seriously, if it looks that bad on a 13in analog, imagine how bad it looks on a 54in HD plasma!

Well when I was the "on call" engineer that's where I spent my time between newscasts.

It's funny how they are not creative in situations they can be, and in situations they don't need to be creative, they try very hard. However I do agree with you on the tight head shots.

And what moron decided to start putting music in the news packages?!

Yeah, dude. Totally. It's a NEWSCAST for crying out loud people!

You know what it is, though? Entertainment Tonight. Why viewers eat that show up is beyond me, but the consultant "gods" that have no clue (there are some out there not as clueless, but they are the slim minority) tell the GM and ND that they need to be exactly like ET. Noooooo, ET is ENTERTAINMENT, your product is NEWS! It's supposed to be INFORMATIVE, not entertaining!
