Question For Our TV Station Folks?

When the digital crossover date finally arrives, will the stations still be broadcasting in any form on channels 4, 6, 8, etc. at all (rabbit ears?) or will they just be on hi-def channels with the hi-def expanded channel numbers and lose their original identities as "Channel 4" or "Channel 6" etc. ? If they are no longer broadcasting on their original single-digit channels at all it seems that continuing to call themselves that would be useless, and they would have to become Channel 704, Channel 706, etc.

Channel 8 I believe is HD only now. I cant get the 8 analog signal on my CCrane radio. Also channel 42 is HD only. Both are called channel 8 and channel 42 still. 42 I believe never was analog.

That's up to the cable operator.

If you're watching OTA, the channel numbers will not change. If you have a digital TV and have scanned in the channels, you will punch in "04" to watch WWL, just like you always have to watch WWL's analog signal. You punch in "06" to watch WDSU on an analog TV - and the same number will get you WDSU's digital signal.

Cable operators are required to continue to deliver analog signals for OTA stations for another 18 months or so. (alternatively, they could give all subscribers a digital cable box at no charge, but few systems are doing that) So the single-digit channels will be around for awhile.

I suppose it's very possible they'll move the OTA stations to channels 4/6/8/etc. once analog cable comes to an end and they no longer need those channel numbers for the analog signals.
