Question for Panama City folks

Okay I lived in Panama City for a number of years and remember the radio stations quite well, it was actually the town I got my start in. Back in the mid to late 80's Captain Norm Miller (from WJHG and later WMBB) was Preston Young's co host on WPFM's morning show (if I can recall this was probably around 1986 or 1987). Even though Captain Norm was a television personality, he also did morning radio so I thought it would be apporopriate to ask this here. My question is, what ever happened to him and why did he leave WMBB in 1998? I heard a bunch of rumors going around about his departure and some people said it was because he did some criminal activity, but I was never able to find any info or news reports of that. It would seem to me like if any of the things I heard were true it would have been all over the news, so I'm wondering if anyone knew anything?

All I remember is one night he was on doing the weather, the next night he was gone and Jerry Tabatt was promoted to Chief Meterologist without an explanation as to where Captain Norm went. A number of years later I made a trip to Panama City (I think this was around 2001) and I happened to turn on WJHG and he was there doing the weather on the weekend. So what's the deal with him? Why did he suddenly vanish from WMBB in 1998 and show up on WJHG, then vanish again? Were the criminal accusations true?

I'm just curious.

Funny you should ask that querstion, it had (if legend is true) to do with a minor infraction. Capt Norm and YPY (rest in peace) were two great PC personalities. I though Capt. Norm had a great delivery on air and I still look for him on some channel when I visit the area. 0f course, now mainly the best talent is at The Beach from the good days of PC radio and of course a certain engineer, who is the sourse and the soul of the industry in the Panhandle.

Yes I heard it was "minor" infractions, but never could verify that. I must say WMBB did a good job of keeping that secret. I recently found an old VHS tape of Captain Norm doing the weather and he was great, I used to watch him every night. I heard from someone he was last seen working at a convenient store at PCB, but this was a few years ago and I don't know if it was true or not. He did do a good job on WPFM's morning show with YPY though.

CCENG and I posted a little about the good Captain a year or two back. Anyone seen or heard from Norm as of late? If he is in retail like that, that is just wrong. That man, for the size of PC, was world class and always was very kind and, uh, happy and kinda mellow. I hope he is ok. Makes me sad.

If possible I'd like to hear about/from of the mid-70's Great 108 guys like...but not limited to...Panama Jack Danials, John Dancer, Stan Powers, Tom Sawyer, Rick Nelson and maybe even Chris Peterson from WWWQ-AM (3WQ) mornikngs. I know that Skip Bishop is in Nashville pushing papers with the industry (was back in the area recently with the Ronnie Dunn record party) and Jeff Davis was in Atlanta at one time promoting records. I grew up listening to PFM from the early days of King Biscuit Flower Hour and News Blimp updates...and started my career there (and 3WQ with John B. Canterberry) years ago. Time flies and things change...but memories remain. And sad about YPY. Loved listening to him on WGNE-AM along with John and Juan long, long, long ago!!

Rick Nelson is in Tallahassee last time I heard.....Jeff Davis aka Mark Elmore is still in the music industry....started to say record promotions but no one knows what a record is anymore. Don't know about the other names eventhough I knew them all when they worked in the market.

Guess that confirms Stan Powers...I had heard, but didn't get any more info. Last I worked with him was as he left (with Larry "StereO'Day") for Kicks 106 in Birmingham.
