Question for Stan and/or CW

This is probably a post for the TV board, but here goes anyway. I seem to remember a UHF station in the 50's or 60's, I believe on ch 33, licensed to Beaumont with the calls KBMT. Their tower was located on (Old) Hwy 90 in Rose City, and I think the tower is still standing. I worked at CH 12 as an engineer in the early/mid 70's, but no one could remember a UHF with those calls. Just wondering.

I may be way off course, but it could be that KBMT was originally that UHF station you mention, later moving on to channel 12 (which I think was dropped in in the early 1960s). The channel 12 facility was located south of Port Arthur at Sabine Pass. They later moved to their present facility, going directional to protect KSLA-TV, also on channel 12, at Shreveport, Louisiana.

According to the 1956 Television Yearbook, it was, indeed the original KBMT in Beaumont that signed on in 1954 on Channel 31. The book lists its affiliation as "ABC-NBC-DuMont." Power was 224 kw visual, 117 kw aural and it broadcast "8 hours a day." I was a kid at the time, but I remember it went off the air permanently probably around the time KPAC-TV Channel 4 (NBC) signed on in 1957.

The current KBMT on Channel 12 (ABC) signed on in 1960 or '61 -- and eventually had to move its transmitter/tower from Sabine Pass to their current site after Hurricane Carla kept them off the air for weeks.

Hey dualux...where did you get your "handle?" Just wondered...Gates had a really fine broadcast audio console in the 60's called a "Dualux" or something very similar.

Hey Blart -- yep, it was the first console I learned radio on in 1965 -- Gates made it and it was a honey.

It wasn't on 33...it was a short lived UHF on 21(?) iirc; the allocation was still listed in Part 73 of the FCC rules in the 70s...The 500ft tower is still there owned by American Tower now (a 2way company I worked for in the 80s there had several systems on the tower..and the main feedline for the old TV station was still there and in use by our radio systems. Harold Bartlett who was Chief Egr of KFDM 6 was the 2way shop owner and knew the history of the UHF station...but alas Harold passed a few years ago) The tower is a 4 sided tower (unlike the 3 sided towers of modern design) The UHF went off before Channel 12 came along. Channel 12 didnt sign on until the early 60s iirc...the UHF was off before 1960...
Not sure about the callsign on the UHF...it MAY have had the call KBMT but had no relation to the current ABC KBMT...(which btw is wanting to stay on VHF 12 after DTV conversion)....

Channel 4 signed on in 1957 as KPAC-TV (for Port Arthur College, which was a part owner -- KPAC was also the call for a well-known AM radio station at the time.)

The change to KJAC happened around 1966 or so, when Jefferson Amusement Company
(JAC) bought out Port Arthur College's share.

Of course, it's KBTV now, but that's another story...

KPAC was 1250 AM....the most powerful AM licensed to Port Arthur (and second to KLVI in coverage of an AM in the Triangle)...it was sold to CC from PAC in the 70s..CC held it and its FM for a while in the 70s and early 80s(KPAC-FM became KHYS in the 70s and is now KTJM 98.5...these two were CC's 1st buy outside of San Antonio)..the AM is now owned by Radio Maria as KDEI.

I remember Channel 4 changing calls in the early 70s...but I could be wrong..
funny thing, when I was DJing on KPAC AM in the mid 70s, people would call me asking for when the tennis game would be on...evidently still confusing KPAC for Channel 4 ;) (tennis on radio???? HMMM in stereo that would sound interesting)

> Of course, it's KBTV now, but that's another story...

Just a way to grab onto Beaumont where the money is now...but their Tech operation center is still in Port Arthur....

I moved to Beaumont in 1978, so I don't remember the UHF "KBMT".

I seem to remember channel 4 being called KJAC when I moved here, and AM 1250 was KPAC.

Ah, the good old days - the pre-KHYS days of 98.5 were memorable. CW, did Dana Melancon work at 98.5 after you worked at KPAC?

My memory is a little hazy, but when I worked for Channel 4 back in 1967 as a part-time "booth announcer", I believe the change to KJAC had just happened. But even into the 70's, seems like most people in the Triangle still called it KPAC(some probably still do!)

In those great pre-automation days, every station break had an announcer on duty who would ride gain and announce the station ID live at the top and bottom of every hour...pretty boring job except when we got to read live ad copy over slides!

......another question with rusted out memories of 1250 AM: does anybody recall when it was KPAC and when it went to a country gold type format, then it became KTXC "TX1250" following the country days into AC for a short while (Alan Scott was one of the jocks there), then onto the KHYS clone as KALO ("Heart and Soul" satellite broadcast)? still stand to be corrected, unless all this took place on possibly another station?..........and also wondering how long was 98.5 FM with the KPAC calls????

Speaking of KJAC. I have a channel 4 Just Watch us Now promo on cassette with the legal ID at the end of it that I recorded off the TV in 82. When I was a kid I used to record movies on audio cassette. I was recording a movie on NBC (KPRC) and for some reason decided to change the channel to 4 to see if I was picking up Beaumont which had been happening before. KJAC was also airing the movie and I left it there. At the end of the movie the promo ran and I let the tape run as kind of a record that I had been receiving channel 4.

1978?? Hmmm I think I was on KAYC/KAYD at the time..do you recall if 97.5 was AOR or Top40 at the time? (I signed KAYD off the air as an AOR on a Sunday night and the next morning, the Top40 format hit the air)

Not sure about Dana...98.5/KHYS had barely gone AOR at the time (maybe a year at most) from its automated beautiful music when I was at KPAC (for the 2nd time after I was at KAYC/KAYD...worked there 1st time when PA College owned them; just after my senior year in High School, and then just after CC bought it...I laughed when they made me sign a non-compete...I looked at the GM and said "WHAT?? You think this is market 10??" What an idiot he was)..I left radio after that...I dont remember if Dana was there or not..
I WISH I could find a tape one of the KHYS DJs had made for me...it had a joke promo made for KIMN (a top40 AM in Denver)..GOD it was funny....it was on a reel that got lost during one of my moves :( I remember one line was talking about Nightsmoke giving away "Cases of Carnation Slender..the only dietetic drink that wouldnt take weight off a cancer patient"...The PD at KIMN had done it and somehow it got out...much like the infamous Casey Kasem "Dead Dog" dedication tape ;)

Dont recall KTXC as any callsign on 1250 Port Arthur...It went from KPAC to KALO then the current KDEI....as far as I know.

From what I remember, 98.5 had the call KPAC-FM from sign on till 1977 or 78 when CC changed it to KHYS and the AOR format hit the air.

UPDATE: Found out KPAC-FM signed on in 1967...(both it and the AM were owned by Port Arthur College from the start...several radio folks and some ham radio ops in the BPT area got their radio "life" started at KPAC AM)
Edited by CW on 03/12/06 10:51 PM.

I went and looked on Recnet's site and they DO show KTXC on 1250..
funny, I was still living in the area at the time but dont recall that call.

KPAC - 1934 (originally 1260 kcs)
KTXC - Nov 24 1981
KALO - Jul 26 1984
KDEI - Jan 12 2000

......knowing that rusted out memories are by no means reliable, but maybe now the rust is startin' to come off!!!....what may help one recall of KTXC was as of the time (late 81-84), were recent sightings of an old TX1250, EZ1380, and an old KALO-AM "Super-fine 99" bumper stickers within a two-week period on some old vehicles! At or about that time there was the AC format on 1250 (after the country format), Gordon Baxter's KTLK 1380 talk station flipped from the old KJET, and before it became KIEZ "EZ1380" AC, the "Nighttime America" satellite program on KIOC (thought it was pretty good @ the time), and also where KWIC was experimenting with automated AC probably where KZZB 95.1 had probably edged them out.....whew!...that's a lotta rememberin' fer me!.......
Edited by dahi on 03/13/06 04:39 AM.

When I moved to BMT, 97.5 was top 40, and for a time had Neil Harrison (now at KLVI) doing the morning show with some moronic morning show chant that for some reason my brain remembers, but I won't recite here. I didn't realize it was AOR at one time - it seems like there were quite a few AOR stations when I moved here (KHYS, KZOM, KGRA-Lake Charles).

KAYD was the only AOR before its flip to Top40..The AOR PD (Michael Danbom, SP?) was morning drive for a while after the flip (which was a mistake! Michael was dry and too laid back for a Top40/AC format..I did morning drive for him one morning and the entire staff thought I should do it full time...I wish I could have!) As for Neal, I could tell some stories on him from his evening show on KAYC :) (especially an interesting one about him and his then girlfriend...a little cutie she was too! Damn what was her name??) It was kinda stupid to have two Top40s with one on AM and one on FM and NOT simulcast..but this was back in the 70s in BMT! :)

When KAYD went to Top40, KHYS (former KPAC FM) was rumored to go to Top40 but went AOR...then KOBS was sold and KZOM was born....ahh the good old days of competitive radio.

I remember the KWIC incident. I seem to remember it was in December that they let the staff go and tried this automation of the station. If I had to pick the number one time that format changes / staff changes seem to occur, its near the end of the year. Merry Christmas - you're fired!
