Question For Those In Big 10 Territory

Do you get regional versions of the Big 10 Network like we do here in Pac 12 Territory?

Reason I ask is we not only get the national Pac 12 Network that the whole country (Or most of it anyway) gets, but those of us in Pac 12 Territory also get regional versions of the Pac 12 Network (Which currently pretty much simulcast the national network at the moment but I expect this to change given time) & was curiously wondering if those of you in Big 10 Territory get something similar where you are

Cheers & 73 :D

On my parents' cable system, yes and no. BTN has their "typical" channel and then two other what they call "game" channels used for regional coverage of games but the rest of the time they're a straight simulcast and not a regional version.

Technically each state gets their own 'feed', for instance my network is listed in the guide as BTNWI for Wisconsin. However in real execution that's more just to keep things organized with listings, and as the years have gone on there's only one real feed, and then the two spillover channels which are basically useless now except in the creampuff non-conference season when you can watch Ohio State pile on against Ohio and such (they're never used for basketball); in fact BTN cut the spillovers from four to two a couple years back as ESPN provides enough venues to get the other three-five games on somehow via scheduling and regionalization these days if not on BTN, and also because the spillovers aren't in HD on many systems, so just for fan experience it's better to get them in HD on another channel rather than sticking them on BTN Overflow 2.

I kinda figure that might wind up being the case for the Pac 12 RNs too since they not only have ESPN but FOX as well (FOX only airs the Championship Game for the Big 10 as everything else is either on BTN or one of the many ESPN channels)

Besides, about THE ONLY two football teams you can currently count on seeing on the Pac 12 Network are the CU Buffs & Wash. St. Cougars (And that's because THEY SUCK BALLS !!! Heck, even CU beat Wash St this season (I know WHOOPIE DOO ::) but still). This also assumes FOX doesn't decide to bury them on an early game on FCS (When that happens, there's NO guarantee that ROOT Sports will even carry the game from there (They may very well decide they can get better ratings & a bigger audience with a CSU Rams or NCAA Div II game (Usually Montana St) than they would with a CU Buffs game)

As for basketball, well who knows? Both the CU teams are pretty good at that from what I hear (Especially the Women's team) ;D

I believe the Big Ten's Tier 1 contract is going to expire in 2016-17. That's your marquee games that usually are seen on network TV. Rumor has it that the Big Ten is going to restructure their contracts at that time so that more content gets into the BTN, then leave their most-desired games up for bidding. So in the future there will be more actual games on the BTN. Since they're adding new members it makes that much more sense. I'm not exactly in Big Ten territory but will be just across the river from it when 2014 rolls around. It will be interesting how BTN is affected in my area. I currently can watch it since I pay to get some sports channels I want. The P12N is in the Sports Pass tier, which I won't pay for, so I can't watch.

Both BTN and P12N are intended to showcase the so-called non-revenue sports that alumni are interested in because between Fox and ESPN most of the football games are already spoken for. In the future, I think, there would be more football games involving teams below the six/seven "king" programs shown on BTN, then a bunch of basketball games and, finally, all the other sports where they can. Look for hockey to end up there when they start up the Big Ten hockey league. Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio State are the six that'll start play in that league.

Lastly, there's talk of the SEC getting their own network off, by 2014 according to rumors. Look for sports like baseball, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, etc., essentially any sport other than king football in that league.

To the original question: My cable company has BTN in the basic tier, but the overflow channels are on the sports tier. The overflow channels are basically useless as Schimpf points out, because they are only used 20 hours a year or so when BTN has the rights to multiple overlapping football games.

BTN also has "BTN Digital", which provides web-only broadcasts of games that aren't broadcast on BTN. This often means baseball or soccer or lacrosse.

Why they don't put some of those broadcasts on the BTN overflow channels, I don't know.

I'm sure that's the intention for sure and hopefully that proves to be true. As it is, if you're a fan of Indiana, Illinois or Purdue football or Penn State or Iowa basketball, you're covered since their mediocrity assures most of the games air on BTN rather than ESPN or ABC. If you're a Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio State or Michigan State fan, you only get football and basketball from them a few times a year, and usually only a non-conference game or a game where the big team runs up the score. That needs to change to make any value sense.

The original intention seemed to be that, but in reality it seems like BTN has become overloaded with stale old football games because somehow Fox and BTN expect actual ratings numbers for golf, swimming, and gymnastics with very few known names outside of the college towns. It's rare I'll find those in primetime; often they'll be tape delayed to late night or the morning.

They've even began to reduce 'school days' where the universities program their closed-circuit university programming on the channel, which has actually turned out to be pretty fascinating rather than having to slog through yet another Michigan/Ohio State replay.

Are the any markets outside of the B10 states that they claim? Think think Rutgers will get them into NYC. BTN is not available on basic cable in Missouri, only on a digital sports package for about an extra $3 a month

BTN only has authorization to use the overflow channels for the 13 weeks of football

There was a fight over getting BTN on the basic tier in Indiana and pretty much anyplace else where Time Warner Cable or Comcast operate. BTN won after about a year.

Speaking of BTN and carriage rights, I wonder what the relationship between the network and Charter is of late. I live in a Big Ten market, and when BTN was launched the local Charter system quickly gave the network a low-numbered expanded basic slot right next to ESPN. However, a few months ago, Charter quietly shoved the SD version of BTN to a channel in the 400s alongside all of sports channels that are viewable only with purchase of a higher-tier package. BTN remains an expanded basic channel, but the new channel placement suggests that could possibly change. I've noticed Charter has made similar moves recently in some other Big Ten markets they serve. This is all with respect to the SD version of the network, though. Generally all of the sports networks Charter offers in HD are lumped together in some form on the HD lineup, regardless of if they are on the expanded basic or the optional sports tier.
