Question for WFAN regular listeners

I listen to WFAN somewhat irregularly, but I am wondering what happened to the regular caller Eli from Westchester. I remember he was invited to the station one time, but seems to has disappeared from the station. Was he banned? I would appreciate it if a regular listener could relate the story. Thanks

Bruce

Yes, he was banned by Francessa. He called in to Mike's Sunday Football show once and, I believe, wished some harm on a baby or kid or something similarly hideous. Mike just flipped out and had him banned from the station, although once in a great while he still gets in under his Tony from the Bronx personna that he often calles WEPN with.

Actually, according to Wikipedia, it was former WFAN host (and WWOR/9 sports anchor) Russ "The Sweater" Salzberg that imposed the ban on the caller:

"... one of the most famous incidents in WFAN history... occurred when Salzberg "banned" Eli from Westchester from calling his show due to his comments that Salzberg considered to be inappropriate."

btw Is this "Bruce from Bayside" that started this thread? ;)

Eli was a black militant racist. No matter what the sports topic was, he would call in and tie in some sort of racial angle to it. Wouldn't be surprised if he made a comment about Salzberg being Jewish or something.

I am not Bruce from Bayside. I never phone radio talk shows because I hate being kept on hold. There is also a Bruce from Flushing.

Didn't wanna assume, but given the topic and name, just thought I'd throw it out there. ;)

As far as the Bruce from Bayside, him being the "legendary" caller than he is, he probably doesn't wait on hold long these days, now that he's established.

I wonder if this is the same Eli who would be a regular caller on Alan Colmes' overnight show on the old WEVD. Those exchanges were always fun. :D

I kind of miss hearing from Jerome -- the rabid Yankees fan. What happened to him? I remember him not being in good health.

It's interesting how some callers actually become qusi-celebrities themselves on talk radio. When I was working overnights listening to The Schmoozer over 13 years ago, I remember enjoying comments from "Short Al," Miriam (the Islanders fan), Doris from Rego Park (RIP), the Bruces and Hilly (sort of an Eli-light). They were always fun and, in most cases, added to the show as regulars.

:)

I think Hilly also used to call into Bob Grant, Lynn Samuels and Jay Diamond's shows back when AM 77 was the "it station" for talk. ;D

I too had wondered what had become of Jerome, but I did happen to catch him one evening during December with Steve Sommers. He was insisting that the Yankees would end up with Twins pitcher Johann Santana, as rabid as ever!

"Short Al" stills calls on the overnight and I still hear "Miriam the Islanders Fan" during Beningo's show. Sadly, "Doris from Rego Park" passed away a couple of years ago. I happened to meet "Bruce from Flushing"--I DJ'd his first (?) wedding back around 1990 (?). What a character!

Before he was banned from the station, I seem to remember Eli (tag line-"it's a conspiracy") winning a station contest allowing him to do an air shift on the FAN.

I recall hearing him call in several times over the past few years, not on the FAN, but their rival, WEPN. At one point, following one call during Michael Kay's midday show in which Jerome came off so belligerent - I forgot what was said, but it was enough for Kay to "ban" Jerome from his show - I do recall him saying to Jerome, "Enjoy Jody and Sid" (now that is REALLY dating myself!). In some of these calls, Jerome spoke of caring for his ailing mother as well as, as previously referenced, his undying passion for the Yankees.
