Question:

If you were going to start a new television network, what would your programming be? How would you differentiate your self from the big 4/little 2 1/2?

It would be programmed of shows that were suprise hits or cult favorites that were cancelled after a few seasons(Think Desperate Housewives, 24, Arrested Development, The Shield, Dark Angel, Family Guy-even though it was brought back).

The original programming would consist of a revival of the BBC's 'Liquid News' entertainment news program. Then some movies, infomercials and various comedies to fill gaps.
The channel would be advertised as the 'anti-television television channel'. The network would be called 'niche'.<P ID="signature">______________

I'd program a rival science fiction channel. You know, one that actually shows sci-fi programming (not reality shows!), doesn't air "Stargate SG-1" ad nauseum, and programs original movies on Saturdays with higher production values than $12.73. You know, a channel that values its fans.

Something in the vein of Canada's SPACE Channel.

That would probably work on cable/satellite, but the original question was obviously phrased to mean a broadcast network.<P ID="signature">______________

I would start yet another 24/7 infomercial channel, just to cheese everybody off. <Evil grin> Only difference would be that it would be innovative: there'd be infomercials for kids (to satisfy E/I), and it would be multicultural with infomercials from around the world. The only break from infomercials would be for a daily, amateurish but innovative national newscast with 9 anchors in a Hollywood Squares setup, and the people in the news would be the anchors - so you could have Michael Jackson, Michael Schaivo, Tom Cruise, one of the Aruban security guards in the Natalee Halloway case, and so forth. This is just to generate some heated discussion on boards like this one! Ha ha!

(Hoping the above is only a joke)

... And then you'd have the FCC breathing down your neck. "Program-length commercials" directed at children are strictly prohibited. You can't even have hosts or central characters appearing in ads within their own show or the ones adjacent to it.

You'd also probably have parents up in arms wanting your license yanked, too. Not worth the risk.

I'd start with news programming that actually focuses on news, instead of giving out endless doses of celebrity gossip and junk news ("runaway bride") being passed off as news. I'd assume that there is an audience out there that wants to be informed instead of being pandered to.

For entertainment programming, I'd look for stuff that is entertaining without being trashy or demeaning -- in other words, none of the type of reality program that seem to get off on humiliating people. Programming wouldn't be limited to a particular genre, and could include adventure, science fiction, comedies, etc...but would try to do stuff that isn't crude or overly gory. Come to think of it, something very similar to what Pax could have been if the management hadn't confused "family friendly" with "overtly religious."

Why don't you just buy PAX. thats 24 hours of informercials.

Oh, but PAX needs some competition. You can never have enough 24/7 infomercial channels.

A BBC One "clone"...

... would do the trick.

Balanced programming, intelligent news, a homogenous branded affiliate network (affiliates would have to be branded under the network name and a geographical area e.g. "BBC NYC") providing impartial intelligent news, and progams that aren't just worth watching, they're successful too.

Mark.

Someone read your mind.

A new network called "The Tube" is being rolled out in several medium markets right now. It features nothing but music videos -- well, that and some commercials, but they are promising at least 50 minutes of music video each hour.

They are being offered as a digital subchannel over the air, free of charge. Right now, it is airing just on Raycom-owned stations, but hopefully we will see it appear in more cities soon.

My idea for a network is rather unusual, but that's just how I think.

It would be more of a hybrid of two networks than one. From 6-7AM, 8-9AM, 12-12:30PM, 5-5:30PM, 6-6:30PM, and 10-10:30PM would be RNL--Real News Live--or something similar. It would be a national newscast without the sensational Michael Jackson nonsense. Affiliates would be required to do local news 5-6AM (dependent on market size/viewership), 7-8AM, 12:30-1PM, 5:30-6PM, 6:30-7PM, 9-9:30PM, and 10:30-11:05PM.

Local affiliates would be free to program 9AM-12PM and 1PM-4PM as they see fit (infomercials/religion would NOT be an option).

Network time would be 4:30-5PM, 7PM-9PM, 9:30-10PM, and 11:05-12:00AM. 4:30-5PM would see a 'News for Kids' thing that is entertaining, unlike the only other kids news I've seen on TV (produced by Weekly Reader, yuck). 9:30-10PM would be filled with a newsmagazine 'in-depth' sort of thing.

12:00AM-5AM would be open to affiliates if they wanted to program shop-at-home programming or something similar, otherwise an RNL newsfeed could be made available for at least part of the evening, along with a rerun of the local 10:30 newscast at 2AM.

Primetime would be 7-9PM seven days a week. Various high-quality shows of all genres would fill this time. I'd likely be more sci-fi-heavy than some (because that's what I like personally), but besides that it would be relatively balanced.

Weekends would also have to be programmed with real programming and news. My biggest complaint about TV is that there's nothing on network TV on the weekends. Not everyone likes sports and infomercials.

To wrap up, here's the schedule:

Weekdays:

5:00a-6:00a Local News
6:00a-7:00a RNL Early Morning
7:00a-8:00a Local News
8:00a-9:00a RNL Morning
9:00a-12:00n Affiliates
12:00n-12:30p RNL Noontime
12:30p-1:00p Local News
1:00p-4:30p Affiliates
4:30p-5:00p RNL for Kids
5:00p-5:30p RNL Afternoon
5:30p-6:00p Local News
6:00p-6:30p RNL Evening
6:30p-7:00p Local News
7:00p-9:00p Primetime
9:00p-9:30p Local News
9:30p-10:00p RNL Focus
10:00p-10:30p RNL Night
10:30p-10:55p Local News
10:55p-12:00m Late Night Talk Show (except Fridays which would have a sketch show like Mad TV/SNL)

Saturdays:

6:00a-7:00a Kids Shows (E/I)
7:00a-9:00a RNL Morning
9:00a-10:00a Local News
10:00a-12:00n Affiliates
12:00n-12:30p RNL Noontime
12:30p-1:00p Local News
1:00p-3:00p Network
3:00p-3:15p Local News
3:15p-3:30p RNL Afternoon
3:30p-5:30p Network
5:30p-6:00p Local News
6:00p-6:30p RNL Evening
6:30p-7:00p Local News
7:00p-9:00p Primetime
9:00p-9:30p Local News
9:30p-10:00p RNL Focus
10:00p-10:25p Local News
10:25p-10:55p RNL Late
10:55p-12:00m Sketch Show (Mad TV/SNL-style)

Sundays:

6:00a-8:00a Kids Shows (E/I)
8:00a-9:00a RNL Morning
9:00a-10:00a Local News
10:00a-11:00a RNL Sunday (Political show)
11:00a-12:00n Affiliates
12:00n-12:30p RNL Noontime
12:30p-1:00p Local News
1:00p-3:00p Network
3:00p-3:15p Local News
3:15p-3:30p RNL Afternoon
3:30p-5:30p Network
5:30p-6:00p Local News
6:00p-6:30p RNL Evening
6:30p-7:00p Local News
7:00p-9:00p Primetime
9:00p-9:30p Local News
9:30p-10:00p RNL Focus
10:00p-10:25p Local News
10:25p-10:55p RNL Late
10:55p-12:00m Late Night Talk Show

Once digital takes over and if they were popular enough, I'd split the networks in two and multicast (both in widescreen 480p), one would be the non-news shows plus much more time for the affiliates, etc. and the other would be the RNL/Local news all the time.

You wouldn't need to schedule so much E/I on the weekends. Only one additional half hour would be needed, as the "RNL for Kids" could probably be counted as E/I. And from the sound of it, would be one of the better E/I programs out there.
