This was a clip shown in an episode of Carson's Comedy Classics, and was evidently from New York in 1972 (the last New York set as constituted beginning fall 1971, with the painted skyline background), with the legendary drummer demonstrating his karate-chopping skills by splitting pieces of wood in two. Carson looks as he did in the immediate period after his permanent move to Burbank that May. In contrast to his frequent trips to Burbank in the New York years, only once did Carson do a series of shows from New York after moving out West. That was a three-week stretch, from Nov. 13 to Dec. 1, 1972, where one of the guests was then-Mayor John V. Lindsay - the last set of Carson Tonight Shows from Studio 6B in Rockefeller Center before that studio was cleared to become the set for the ambitious NewsCenter4 that premiered in 1974. According to IMDb, Mr. Rich was a guest on Nov. 29, 1972, which was from that last New York set of shows; would this have been the origin for that bit?
