Question on renewing FCC license...

Hi, I'm close closing on my first station, a standalone AM in the Deep South that has a license expiring next summer.

The FCC website was clear on how to renew...but my question is WHEN to renew?

Is it anytime before the expiration?

A set period of days before expiration?

On the day of expiration?

I appreciate your insight.

Thanks.

Here is the applicable rule, 73.3539:

Application for renewal of license.

(a) Unless otherwise directed by the FCC, an application for renewal of
license shall be filed not later than the first day of the fourth full
calendar month prior to the expiration date of the license sought to be
renewed

Here's the complete list of filing dates:

http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/newsite/docs/renewal-dates-by-state.pdf

Don't forget that you have to run pre-filing announcements on the first and sixteenth of the month for two months before the filing date.

Also, do your due diligence! Go look at their public file & make sure that they have "issues" reports for each quarter since the last renewal. Otherwise, if you close, then are inspected, you get to pay the fine. Since it's an AM, might be wise to see if they have any old engineering applications for the station, too. Not required for the public file (except for contour maps), but could prove valuable in the future. Especially if it is a DA.

You might be surprised by certain places who do not even announce once, not even within thirty days, much less during the required times. Fortunately we can go online to find out the answers to those questions.
