Question

This is a question for the fellow Christians on the board here.

I was on the DX board here on radio-info not too long ago. I've seen where people have posted about listening to different stations, and they'll usually list formats of particular stations they catch. Some of these are religious stations (I really dislike that term "religious station" because christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship, but for the sake that some religious stations aren't necessarily Christian in nature, I'll refer to them as such). Anyhow, I'm getting off the topic here. It's late...

What I was wondering if any of you were (or maybe knew of someone) DXing and listening to a christian station (preaching, etc) and was saved as a result of that experience, either at the time or possibly later?

I was thoroughly confused by all of them, all claiming to be "the only ones who have the truth". Just try listening to Garner Ted Armstrong as a junior high schooler when we were poised for the Soviets to push the button at any moment.

Yeah, that's true there are a lot of people out there claiming to "know the truth". The Bible tells us that there will be false teachers out and about. In the end, the only way we can know what is actually truth is to go back to the Bible. The scriptures tell us that "you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free". (John 8:32)

Although a lot of people believe there are many ways to God, there's only one way, who is Jesus Christ. Jesus said "He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no man comes to the Father but through Me." (John 14:6). I'm sure there are many who'll say otherwise (false teachers and such), and it may not be "politically correct" to state Jesus is the only way to God in this day and age, but that's what the Bible says, and the Bible is truth.

I've heard some of the many "christian teachers" on the air today, a lot of them on shortwave radio. I believe that, although we should try to understand the Bible as much as possible, there's a lot of information in there we have to sort through and study, and we may not understand it to the fullest extent we can. Even across different Christian denominations, there are conflicts sometimes about what a particular scripture or scriptures actually mean. Although everything in the Bible is important, we do need to know the most crucial information about how we can know God, what happens to us after we die, and where we'll spend eternity. It's too much of a risk to just hope we have the right information. After all, if we don't have accurate information about eternity, and we leave this life, there'll be no way of changing what we thought was correct. The Bible is very clear, though, about how we are to be saved and how we can know where we'll spend eternity. Most of us know John 3:16, but there are numerous verses that God in His great wisdom has repeatedly placed throughout the Bible so we won't "miss it" or misunderstand what we need to do.

I can't answer your DXing question directly, but I can answer generally.

I used to know a gentleman who toured with a jazz band and found himself in a New York City hotel room one night while on tour. He was bored, and flipped on the TV. He started watching a Christian station and after some time, gave his heart to Jesus right then and there.

I have many issues with Christian TV. I think a lot of it is pointless and some of it is, frankly, borderline heretical. But this man found Jesus because of this evangelist's program. If it could happen to him, I don't see why it's not possible for someone to hear the Gospel and respond to it from a distant radio program. God can, and will use, many things to reach the lost.

I wasn't saved through listening, but my faith definitely enhanced.
1977 - Lubbock, TX - DX'd a CCM station in Amarillo on 101.9 (all Lubbock had was preaching and hymns on 92.7).
1979 - last year in college in Austin, TX - listened to the old KFMK 97.9 Houston (later became KSBJ). It led me to the church I would attend in Houston.
1987 - 1990 - DX'ed an WSAE 89.3 Spring ARbor and 103.5 (from Detroit) - both CCM - while in Jackson, MI
1990 - 1999 - DX'ed Hot AC WCIE Lakeland, FL from Daytona Beach and Melbourne, FL - prior to their destruction at the hands of Moody in 1996. DX'ed WAY-FM 88.7 Ft. Meyers and 88.1 West Palm Beach after that. 88.3 WPOZ was a first adjacent to then useless WWIA in Palm Bay 88.5. Used a lot of 110 kHz filters in all my radios because the transmitter of 88.5 was only a mile away. Even helped the Z with a remote in Palm Bay with one of my modified tuners! Now thankfully 88.5 is rebroadcasting Z88.

The common thread in all this - CCM, Hot AC, Christian rock. All deepened my faith. I was willing to DX them even when there were strong local preaching / praise and worship / hymn type stations.

As a kid back in the 1950's and 60's, I'd tune in to Billy Graham's "The Hour of Decision" to hear his sermons. At that time NBC Radio carried his program on our local NBC radio affiliate WDEL-AM. I also remembering catching Graham's broadcast on CBS radio and Mutual, as they too used to carry his program as well, obviously Graham's ministry bought that time, but isn't it interesting that at least three of the radio networks then would sell time to Graham. Would that happen today? I didn't get saved at that time, but the seed was planted and it took years to germinate and grow, but eventually it did.

The bigger problem with many televangelists today is that they seem to be so very money oriented. The so called prosperity gospel, etc. Many don't seem to have the credibility of Billy Graham. Obviously many do. That's the problem today, there are so many out there on radio and TV that a seeker of Christ can get confused and disillusioned by the various voices on the air today. The problem with TV is you can see what they look like. I'm sure the lady is a sweet servant of the Lord, but the Blond on TBS (her husband owns the network) makes many people think of Tammy Baker and that's not a good image to go for.

I'm rambling, I appologize, but I know folks who are not saved who have been very turned off by televanglelists. If they all were of the quality and integrity of Billy Graham, no problem, but that isn't the case. The send in $ 20 dollars and we'll send you a healing cloth, as they wear a rollex watch and a Brooks Brothers 3 peice suit, Italian loafers, and live in extravagance type of televeangelist need to be gone from the air waves. That doesn't mean they should be paupers, but something rings false when they are living like the rich and famous and begging folks for their money to keep their ministry on the air. Then it seems that they've lost the proper prospective and focus of what their ministry should be about.

TBN not TBS. The blonde is Jan Crouch and yes, her husband runs the Trinity Broadcasting Network.....which I avoid like the plague.

In the DXing (Mostly AM) that I've done in the past most of the stations that were supposed to be a Christian format were the "Dollar a Holler" type that allows anyone on the air that flashes enough mone in the station management's faces. There may be good quality programs like Billy Graham on some of them, but too many times you also end up with nuts like Gene Scott and RG Stair. I won't say that there haven't been people won to Christ through the good ministries, but I can't help but wonder how many more people have been repelled by the crackpots and conspiricy freaks. The same appiles for TV, and shortwave is even worse.

I've heard very few music oriented CCM stations in DXing, and I belioeve that this would be more effective in reaching people for Jesus, but now that AM is mostly talk oriented, that isn't very likely to happen.

Once again I tried to add to my post, but time ran out... ::)

I've been able to catch a few FM CCM stations that I've been on the outer fringes of with a good antenna. The best was WDJC 93.7 in Birmingham from Dyersburg, TN in the 80's until 93.7 got a local station, and then also WGCF 89.3 in Paducah, KY on a more regular basis.

It didn't get me saved but i've heard a few of the wayFM's down south here in Ohio Dxing when the conditions are right.

I can also once in awhile DX YES-FM from Toledo Ohio here in the Columbus Area.
