Here is a thought and maybe someone can explain to me why we as programmers still do this.
Everybody here either has an ipod or has kids who have an ipod. Most people have an average of 300 or more
songs on their ipod.

So here is my question why do we have such a short play list? People can create their own radio station on their mp3 player but we are still playing those same 90 songs over and over

Yes I know what the research says I look at media base but the numbers show TSL has taken a hard hit over the past couple years.

I'm sure all you can relate to this but I have listeners ask me why do you play the same songs over and over.


I would love to hear your thoughts

Yeah I know Stewy but as I said then we have to change with the times the kids are running around with more songs in their pocket then KMX or Wild ever had (Well KMX after Doc and Terry)

I know my friends who are consultants are gonna wanna kill me (nothing but love for you guys ;D ) but we have to offer the listener more than just music they can find flo-rida or David Banner anywhere

I think people may keep hundreds of songs on their iPod but if you check their iTunes playlist stats, I bet there are songs that play more than others. Show me an iTunes playlist where each song is played evenly to every other song and I would be shocked. I believe formats are tight because it works, usually. Stations that paint broad strokes usually lose to stations with a narrow focus on format and audience.

Great points--but if they keep hundreds of songs and do play more that others why are there hundreds? Every once in awhile they want to hear something different, something that make makes them go "OH WOW!" That is why we need larger playlist for the "OH WOW!" effect. It keeps them listening between their favortie songs for something they normally don't hear.

But a Good PD understands why.

If I ever see that PD chair again I want to be the kind of PD that thinks and understands why

Perhaps the reason for mp3 players' overwhelming success is not the size of the playlist, but the accessability. You can hear "Song X" anytime you want, anywhere you want. There's a generation that is growing up with a "we can do it right now" sensibility--DVRs, mp3 players and high speed internet. Radio has become that "annoying neighbor's playlist that I can't control" and they're (literally and figuratively) tuning radio out.

By having a smaller playlist stations may alienate long-form listening but may actually gain short term ears because there's a better chance that "Song X" will play within a specified time. Unfortunately I can't blame radio totally, it's people who have shorter attention spans. :mad:

I like Pandora better. You can 'program' several stations, give them names, and share them with other people. You should try it before the SoundExchange fees put it out of business, though... :-[

It's almost like you understand the pattern of 80% of radio listeners who say they listen in their cars from stop to stop and the average TSL is 15 minutes and they say they are most likely to stop on a station that is playing a sonmg they like rather than one they don't know. Thus, the playlists they have at stations. You have to think like the majority of listeners rather an the 7% who say they listen to a station for more than 2 hours at a time to realize why radio is the way it is. It's SIMPLE math, which is probably why it's hard to grasp.

I'm one of those 7%, but I love psychology and understanding how the other 93% think. Seems pretty simple to me, but then I'm not in radio. :D
