Questions about possible December Sporadic E events

I've always heard mid-late December can have some E skip but I've never experienced it myself.

When is the best time to start looking?

Is there any particular time of day it's more likely?

I'm asking because out of curiosity, I checked the DX Sherlock MUF map and it almost looks like summer right now with many markings, the highest being 71 MHZ.

Sporadic-E is called "sporadic" for a reason. It isn't that predictable.

But, in the Winter season, there are some general patterns. Winter E can start was early as November, but doesn't really get going until mid-December. I have found the peak to be between Christmas and New Year most years with the best opening often being on the 26th. You mileage may vary, of course.

Sporadic-E can happen any time of day. In the Winter, though, I have found the evenings to be most active. Those openings often start late afternoon and go late into the evening. Morning openings, which are common in Summer, are less common in Winter openings.

There is some E happening today. There is a 10 meter (28 MHz) ham contest today and I have worked a handful of stations via the mode. I haven't seen the MUF get very high, though.

Enjoy.

I did once heard E skip many years ago on a December though it was weak; I remember hearing a Houston station in northern VA. It was KHMX 96.5.

Thanks.

The maps have been helpful and I probably would have missed the two big events I documented this past season had it not been for the MUF maps.

Last season was a big ripoff.

Yes, the MUF maps are fabulous.

I spend a lot of time working DX in the 144 MHz ham band. In the Summer, those real-time maps are amazing. You can see the fleeting openings coming -- which is a huge advantage as those openings sometimes only last a few seconds.

I find winter Es tends to peak around 1pm. Here in Australia, we have our "mini peak" in June. MUFs generally reach around 64Mhz.

There's now an e cloud over NW Utah with a MUF of 87 MHZ.

The MUFs have been slowly going up tonight.

FM is next! I think we should pay attention as it seems it might be active the next couple of weeks.
