1. What exactly does a program director do?
It depends on the station. A small market station will be different from a major, and a talk station different from a music one.
Generalizing... for a non-satellite music station...
1. Keep the license safe. Make sure station abides by FCC and all other rules and laws.
2. Schedules music logs
3. Supervises and airchecks airstaff... schedules vacations, gets fill for emergencies.
4. Does station and client promotions
5. Coordinates remotes.
6. Probably does an airshift.
7. Selects new music if station plays currents.
8. Works with consultant and research company if station has either.
9. Records some spots, writes some copy, does promos and writes liners and such.
10. Meet with community leaders, clients, etc.
11 Whatever else the manager thinks is part of the job.
2. What are the responsibilities of a program director?
1. Keep license safe; get an audience the sales department can market.
3. Do program directors pick all of the music that is on a radio station?
If station can afford research, the listeners do the picking except new songs, which are hit and miss and decided on by listeners a few weeks later.
4. Do program directors get to choose all of the jingles and imaging for their station?
Jingles may be based on a corporate agreement determining supplier. Imaging is often decided on by PD and GM or PD and corporate programmer...
5. Do program directors get paid more than disc jockeys?
Sometimes. If the station has a big morning show with big revenue and ratings, the morning guy or gal or team likely makes a lot more.
6. What is the average salery for a program director?
Minimum wage to $1 million... depends on market, station, format, supply and demand.
7. What is a typical day for a program director?
Long. See the list above. Most of those are daily functions.
Oh, and for the on-air portion, add one more: learn how to "go" in 3 minutes or less.
