Questions about SW stations and locations.

I didnt want to make 2 threads when I can ask these questions in one post. Anyway,, Usually early morning about 3 AM Radio Australia comes in here in Indiana,, they have a strong signal, so does it really come from Australia, or is it Relayed from somewhere else,, that is a heck of a long way. Also,, I hear Radio Chica RCI or something like that all night and they broadcast in English, the signal is really strong, so im wondering too if this is relayed from the U.S or Canada? Also, while listening to radio havanna cuba, I was listening to some killer Tropical Cubia tunes, and right at 5 AM they pulled the plug and went silent,, no carrier, no proper sign off,,, just pulled the plug mid song,, so im wondering if they broadcast on MW or FM as well, seems like if it was only SW they would have a proper sign off,, and why do SW not broadcast 24/7, and why do they switch the frequencie bands at different times a day. Now I already know that propagation constantly changes and favors certain frequencies at a certain time of day,, but WWV uses all their freqs 24/7.... WWV is the only 24/7 SW station I know of. Also why does Radio Cairo have such a dirty signal, it tends to drift alot. And a few more questions,, I heard a station playing POP and Dance music on I think it was 6615 called Radio Nedarlands,, and it had a strong signal,, but I havent heard it in weeks,,, I emailed Radio Nederlands to ask when their next U.S and Canada broadcast would be, they never replied, and I havent heard them on the SW Band. It is my Understanding that Radio Nederlands is in fact relayed from here in North America..Correct... Also, I occasionally hear POP and Dance and even Country music on 9885 around 7 or 8 PM,, I think they speak Arabic.. Could this be North Africa's VOA Service. And also,, does anyone know if Europa Plus from Russia still broadcasts on SW,, I know I heard them on 1022 in 2005, but that may have been a seasonal freq... Thnks so much,, And I dont expect anyone to answer all of these mile long questions, but I think overtime, most of you can help me figure out some of this.. Im sure Stormy will help with what he can,, not to cal you out,, if you dont know its ok...

You also might like to read Glen Hauser's World of Radio DX Listening Digest: www.worldofradio.com. From the main page you can click on "latest DXLD". You will get most of questions answered there, every week or so. Radio Nederlands, as well as the BBC World Service, Deutsche Welle and some others, decided years ago that no one in North America listens to SW radio. So they ceased all broadcasting to us in order to cut costs and increase the budget for language services in non internet parts of the world. Their excuse was that the majority of our populations are online and they expected us to use the internet to listen to their programming. Fat chance, most SW listeners refuse to use a computer to listen to the radio. Some SW broadcasters terminated their SW services completely, like Swiss Radio Intl, Radio Italy Intl and many others. But if you are resourceful and depending on propagation, you still might be able to hear BBC WS Africa or Asia, DW intended for Africa and Radio Nederlands African or Asian service. But the listening times aren't as convenient as in they were in the pre internet days. The only SW broadcasters left that actually target North America are really not worth listening to, Radio Chinal Intl, Radio Havana Cuba (which sometimes tries to relay Radio Venezuela Intl) and all of those pious religous merchants and conspiracy/gold coin non GM seed dealer talkshows (crap that AM/FM won't carry). But there are SW signals out there, its just a little harder to find them.

I used to hear Radio Australia best in the U.S. Morning (they had a north American service about 7am Eastern. ) That apparently is the best time for propagation between here and there. Also used to hear an Australian regional early mornings

IIRC, Radio Australia was on 9580 and ABC Perth was on 9610 or 9615 in the '70s. Both stations were audible in most of the US in the early-morning until maybe an hour or two after sunrise.

I don't know how Glen Hauser does it. What a great resource.

Not directly related to your questions, but Ontario DX Association http://www.odxa.on.ca/ publishes their monthly bulletin online and it is free, and in .pdf format. Just click on the listening in tab.

It is a great source for the shortwave listener, and includes a monthly update for all english language broadcasts on shortwave. There are several other updates including "Target Listening" which lists where, when and how to hear all countries broadcasting on shortwave, plus member loggings and more.

I've got some time :)

Most of them come from Australia. But I see listings for Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Palau, etc.

Also,, I hear Radio Chica RCI or something like that all night and they broadcast in English, the signal is really strong, so im wondering too if this is relayed from the U.S or Canada?

A few CRI signals do come from Havana or Sackville (Canada). They also use Austria.

Most of the big broadcasters have multiple streams going all the time, so it would probably just carry on on some other frequency.

Now I already know that propagation constantly changes and favors certain frequencies at a certain time of day,, but WWV uses all their freqs 24/7.... WWV is the only 24/7 SW station I know of.

I've noticed some religious broadcasters and some South Americans stations go 24/7.

Also why does Radio Cairo have such a dirty signal, it tends to drift alot.

I don't know, but their audio is sometimes really lousy (Radio Havana, too).

The schedule I'm checking (eibi) shows their English broadcasts primarily aimed at Asia and Africa. They do aim shows at the US, but only in Dutch. 2 hours a day, they broadcast from VOA towers in Greenville NC, Spanish to SAmerica. Quite a few more broadcasts come from Bonaire. More come from all over Europe and Asia.

Also, I occasionally hear POP and Dance and even Country music on 9885 around 7 or 8 PM,, I think they speak Arabic.. Could this be North Africa's VOA Service.
