Questions about WERK Muncie

Hi there.... long-time lurker, second-time poster. ;-)

I am not in the radio business, just someone who does care about radio. With that in mind, can anyone tell me how the quality of the broadcast (audio processing, maybe?) of WERK 104.9/WURK 101.7 can change so drastically from song to song? One song may sound so clear and strong, yet when the next one plays it sounds like wads of cotton were stuffed next to my stereo's speaker cone. Or is it an issue with the source from which the songs were obtained (CDs or how they were downloaded to a hard drive)? It seems to happen quite a lot.

I also noticed a couple times now that when WERK plays Vanity Fare's "Hitchin' a Ride," it is an obvious re-recording, complete with noticable 80s sounding keyboards and production. Are there some oldies titles that are hard for stations to obtain due to licensing and legal obstacles concerning original versions? This "new" version really stands out and sounds grossly out of place.

Thanks.... and I hope to be able to contribute thoughtful discussion from time to time. :)

I'm no longer in Indiana, but when I was, I noticed that, too. Usually, to me, at least, they sounded more like the wads of cotton. Based on what I heard, I'd be more inclined to guess it was how they were processing their signal, but if it's varying from song-to-song, as you say, then I'd guess it would have something to do with their song sources. Perhaps someone out there might have a better answer than me.
As for Vanity Fare, I'm surprised that they wouldn't have the original, as it's relatively easy to find. And every station I've heard it on, including the old Gold 104.5 in Indy, WGRR in Cincy, Y102 in Raleigh, and the oldies station in Winston-Salem all play the original.
