Questions about WLAD / Danbury

I saw a post for PD at WLAD in Danbury. When I did some station research NOTHING came back, outside of a website that links you to their newsroom (which, I cannot imagine is very large considering the lack of a website).

Can anyone tell me anything about this station before I waste my time getting in touch with them?

Local Morning Show til 9AM. Local Show at Noon. Home of both Dr. Joy (9AM-Noon) and Dr. Laura (1PM-4PM). 1000 watts day/290 at night. They carry either The NY Jets or The NY Giants for NFL. I also believe they are part of the UCONN Huskies Network. Not sure what their weekend schedule looks like, but they used to carry Kim Komando on Sunday Mornings. Not sure if they still do.

Very much a 1 or 2 town operation. I attended WESCONN in the late 70's (home of Dr. Mel) and they went AM STEREO. I think they still are, or only recently not. CKLW swamps the signal at nite, and its barely RX'd here 30 miles away during daytime. The G5 will get it with the bells and whistles on, but left in standard state, or with most typical sets, borderline. There was a time when they broadcast ESPN sports. Not sure of sports affiliation when listening to Jets/Giants.

But... its Fairfield County in CT bordering Westchester County in NY ... keep that in mind also. At least see if theres a few bucks in it.

I can tell you that WLAD not only carries the Giants, but Westwood One's NFL games even the Super Bowl. LAD also airs UCONN basketball and the Yankees. The local show at noon is Greater Danbury at noon--it's an hour-long newscast with features. Weather is provided by either Gary Lessor, who has the most rather annoying presentation out there and by the one and only Dr. Mel, who as someone else posted has something to do w/Western CT State U.

When not doing local news on the hour, they are a CNN Radio affiliate. They also include sound from CNN Radio reporters in said newscasts. LAD is also a member of the CT Radio Network. LAD is owned by The Berkshire Broadcasting Company and is located at 198 Main Street. And from having been to Danbury a couple of times and seeing the studios, it may be a problem trying to park unless you take a right at the light past the studio which I think is near either the library or City Hall, then hope for the best.

LAD's sports guy is Bart Basturna, whose stacatto and at time over the top presentation is a riot!

And LAD even plays music. Tuning in on my car's radio even here in lower Fairfield County, they have AC music and can play currents and a bit of recurrents. People also know about LAD's sister station WDAQ--98Q the De Facto number one station in Danbury. Reason it's #1, well it keeps it local in terms of advertising and that you would have a strong youth base at West Conn with their top 40 leaning Hot AC format.

Now if only WLAD had its own website--98Q even True Oldies 850 have one!

The station is in a suite of a building that housed senior citizens twenty years ago. The address is the same, so I assume that is still true.

Oh, the smells one would encounter while traversing the elevator and hallways of 198 Main Street. I don't think I need say more...

Wow! I forgot about that! Somebody liked to cook cabbage a lot.

Well, that's not EXACTLY what I was referring to, but now that you mention it...

BTW, The building still houses the elderly.... and the insane... and those just suffering from dimensia and/or incontinence...

Another BTW...

Contact me if you have been fired by Berkshire Broadcasting and your code has been changed.... I'll tell you how to get in and exact your revenge... LOL!

Unless they have recently updated equipment it is still an engineer's nightmare. Management is myopic. Just go find a WLAD web site.

They best thing they have is a truly world class news director.
