Questions and the FCC

Just thought I'd pass this along. It seems the FCC will reply to a question when it is phrased in a non-threatening, polite way (at least I thought it was polite).

Hello,

I noticed that in the Broadcast Actions for 6/28, it appears that the FCC has granted construction permits to Radio Assist Ministry and Edgewater Broadcasting for two translators in CA.

I thought the FCC had frozen all translator transactions with respects to applications filed during the great translator give-away of March 2003 in order to assess whether these channels could be used for LPFM service as well as to investigate possible fraud on the part of RAM and Edgewater regarding their applications?

Has this changed?

Here is the reply from Irene Bleiweiss at the FCC:

"The two that you mention were not grants of initial permits for new
translator stations. They were "assignments", e.g. sales of permits
that had already been issued. The LPFM policy that you mention does not
prohibit sales of existing permits."

The FCC is kind of like the IRS. They are very helpful and will help you if you are cooperative, and you are not trying to break the law. If you are in the latter, then you will have problems.

True, they can get ham-fisted and go way overboard when it comes to enforcement.

I really asked the question as a way of letting the FCC know that many people are watching this issue regarding RAM and the translator applications as well as how they manage "our" airwaves as a whole.
