Questions from a Nashville board newbie

Hey all, living in Atlanta and looking to relocate in Nashvegas and am I curious about the radio market. Is it stale, hard to get into (yeah, I know most major cities are hard to break into), does Clear Channel rule uber alles, and so on.

I've been busting my a$$ the last three years in a college radio station (www.wras.org), have a decent grasp of most radio station aspects (from programming to production to promotions to on-air talent), and have garnered a small following of listeners doing my shows. I'd like to take my talents elsewhere and would appreciate your opinions.

Thanks all! I look forward to cruising this board more often.<P ID="signature">______________

I would recommend an outlying market such as Clarksville. Five Star (or whoever owns many stations in that market) hires people with experience. Many former Nashville jocks find work at those stations. Those include, but are not limited to: WCVQ Q-108 FM, Eagle 94.3 FM, 540 and 1370 AM, WZZP 97.5 perhaps others. Others will give you more and better information where Nashville is concerned. Clarksville is about 40 miles northwest of Nashville. Good luck in your move.

Dude, you sound like me. I live here, been working tediously in the minors for like three and a half years, and I still haven't been called up to the majors yet, so don't get your hopes up.

That's what I thought. Last night I was researching Nashville stations and later this week I'll check into the stations you mentioned. Thanks for the info, I truly appreciate it!

Ah, but I have to keep my hopes up! Without trying to sound like a cliched Hallmark card, hope is what drives me. Keep up the hard work and never give up. We'll get there in time.

Jet and Digital,
Do not give up hope, I played in the minors so to speak and then gave up. I have regretted doing so ever since. I have been out of the bis for almost 19 years but am still haunted by thoughts of unfullfilled dreams.
good luck to you both and DO Not give up.

Hey Donman,

Thanks for those words of encouragement. See, that's what I'm afraid of happening. I'm 31 (life changes caused me to go back and follow this dream) and I don't want to give up and look back 10 years from now kicking myself. I knew I was insane going for this line of work, but I refuse to give up.

Digital,

I checked the web sites of those Clarksville stations. They are owned by Saga Communications. Fortunately for you there are three job openings: one in sales and two in technical/board/remote. You may want to give it a look and submit a resume.

Digital--

Listen to Donman. This is what you want to do, so give it a shot. Ignore the nay-sayers. I almost listened to them and that would've been a big mistake. You can do it and if you are persistent, you WILL make it happen.

Good luck!

Thanks, courier! You saved me some trouble and found a couple of nice prospects! I'm in your debt for helping me with this. I'll be sure to post about my findings after I get the resumes sent out.

Thanks!

I listened to the nay-sayers before and that put me 7 years behind. I refuse to listen to them again and fall back even further. I just listen to the positive people in my life and my fantastic listeners and ignore the negativity.

Thanks!

I hear ya Andy! I held out of radio for too long and FINALLY got back into it and never looked back. You have to keep the positive attitude and work your butt off. But(t) for those of us that enjoy radio, those that have the PASSION it is a labor of love!

A good friend of mine is only 25 and is knocking them dead. It can be done, but you have to WORK.

Since I am not in programming or on air (I am in engineering) there are not as many jobs open for me. Sure would kill to get into ATL or Nashville!

Someone out there need a GREAT Chief or Director of Engineering???
