questions.....

I come to this board for one reason....to discuss radio. Why? Cause it's fun!

Since it's been 4 days since anyone posted I thought I'd throw a few questions out there to try and get things started.

Which area personality to you think is the best at "working the room"?

Which morning show is the most compelling?

Which station looks the best on remotes?

Which area programmer is the best?

Which station does the most with the least?

Which station is the next to "flip formats"?

Who is the most "hated" GM?

Anyone up for discussing?

Sad really.

I'm curious as to why someone would come to a radio board and not participate.
Is it the questions? If so, feel free to pose your own.

I know LOTS of radio pros who will lurk on these boards, just to see what people are saying. Hence, the unwritten rule is always watch what you say, coz you never know who's "listening".

Some of the questions you pose (example: who's the most hated GM) could potentially open a can of worms for the up and coming jock, or seasoned pro who still wants to make a go at it.

Yep! They are great questions except "Who is the most "hated" GM?"
Do you think most people are:
1. Listing to their I pod
2. Listing to Sirius or XM
3. Just do care about local radio anymore.
I myself loved local radio but, when all the stations started to sound "cookie cutter" I started listing to other things listed above.
Maybe the days of the local AM or FM station that was the soundtrack to us growing up are over?
That's my $.02

I have to go along with Rob on these. As an out-of-work jock, I think I could become permanently out-of-work by answering the questions. It's true that there are a lot of lurkers on this board, and you never know... one of them could be the one that you just sent your T&R to!
:D

I grew up in this radio market, but have been away since 1996. I also was never involved in radio. Therefore, I could not post any answers. Of course, I'd like to hear some of the answers to some of the questions too, but in no position to personally answer, unless this was 1996. When I left, KOOL 94.9 had Tod Jeffers, WIOV was Casey and Weems, 106.7 was Z-107 and I think Brad Flick; Q-106 was Cook and Crocket. So, no I can't answer the questions.

You might have gone out on a limb and answered some of your questions yourself to get the ball rolling. I'll give an opinion on one of them: who does the most with the least...

AM: Ray Thomas and the crew at WIOO Carlisle. They don't get far with that 1,000 watts and only operate in the daytime, but they fill both a musical and community niche very well and regularly show in the Harrisburg book. WIOO is live, local radio, a rarity in these times. Compare that to most other AMs. I also admire their efforts to improve their coverage by changing frequencies and increasing power. They're fighting a difficult battle with a powerful company, Radio One, and I hope they succeed.

FM: Paul Scott and WSJW Smooth Jazz 92.7, a niche format on a Class A that is executed with more finesse than many major market stations in the same format, using the same consultancy. Compare 92.7 with 104.3 in Baltimore. Well, there is no comparison. The audience may be smaller than some but it is a loyal one, and Paul works hard to make it sound right.

These two stations have one thing in common: they recognize and super-serve their core audiences. I would have this opinion even if I did not know these two broadcasters personally.

As for most hated GM...well, I used to have a '76 Chevy Nova that could get stuck in a dusting of snow. I really hated GM for that.

I worked for John Lipez in Lock Haven from 1983 to 1984 when the FM was WCMN Country 92. He was pretty cool to work for. His dad, Harris, was a great guy. I was sorry to hear he'd passed. John got pretty mad when I quit to work for WSQV but I don't blame him. He thought I was going to be there alot longer than I was.

Don't laugh...there was an Arthur Carlson, who was VP of radio for Susquehanna Radio Corporation when it was in existence. He even tried to get his same-name character on WKRP in Cincinnati eliminated from the script at the network. Naturally, it didn't work. The Arthur Carlson for Susquehanna was a jerk, meddler, and a lot of other things. He wouldn't let people do their jobs. I know because I was at WSBA at the time.

Anyone see similarities here to the infamous Brian Danzis?
