Quick FM Switcheroos in Abq

Switch of the hour: Clear Channel's Mega 104.1 is now Smooth Jazz 104.1. Then KAGM wasn't supposed to pull the plug on Talk until 6 PM tonight, but by midday they were simulcasting Sol 106.7. Wonder what that does to AGM's supposed plan to switch 106.7 to Jazz and continue the Spanish "memories" format on KAGM's 106.3?

Well since AGM leaks like a broken pipe and they take forever to nake a change it's no wonder Clear Chan beat them to the punch and I am sure they over paid for a PD and now will be in a Dog Fight and at best will split the 3.0 share Horizon use to get. That Means they are trading in a 0.5 station for a 1 share station. If AGM was smart they would do CLASSIC COUNTRY get a 3 to 4 share and bill over 2 mil like the range did

The Range did not bill over 2 million.

Funny I talked with the former Sale Manager there and thats what he told me. Maybe he was just blowing smoke.

NOW from the OOOOPS FILE Read this article from NM business weekly February of 2005

Clear Channel Communications Inc. is changing the programming format of its Albuquerque radio station 104.1 FM from "World Class Rock" to a mix of Hispanic and urban music.

At noon on Friday, the on-air programming and branding will change to "Mega 104.1," says Chuck Hammond, Clear Channel's Albuquerque and Santa Fe vice president and general manager.

The change reflects the shift in programming from rock to the mix of Hispanic and urban music, Hammond says. "Our moniker is 'Latino & Proud.' The 18 to 34 Latino market is our target."

Disc jockeys at the station will broadcast predominantly in English, but the music will be primarily Spanish and advertising will be a mixture of both, Hammond says.

"We are today contacting all advertisers to let them know what's happening and to give them the choice of whether to continue with us or to go elsewhere," Hammond says, adding that the first 10,000 songs the new radio station plays will be advertising free.

"104.1 is the strongest FM signal in the state. But with World Class Rock, we weren't developing the ratings and the revenues we wanted. ... The station was profitable, but we expect a tremendous increase [in revenues]," Hammond says.

WELL THATS TWO STRIKES will Smooth Jazz be #3

The truth of the matter is - since Twin Peaks had the station pre-Clear Channel, its always been neglected. KLSK had all the potential - but all the neglect of an ugly stepchild. Likewise with World Class Rock - which was launched all wrong. Until ownership really makes the investment, its going to be simply treated as a gamble..."Let's see if this will stick...."

I have to say, Ed, that, often as we may disagree, I absolutely agree with you here. KLSK 104.1 actually performed very well as a classic rocker until it merged operations with 94 Rock. 104.1 is a case consolidation opponents can truly hang their hats on. A successful station was bastardized into irrelevance because it became a station that was always used as a blocker and nothing more.

I will also say that it's kind of nice to see 104.1 go full circle. I seem to recall the station always had new age, which later became smooth jazz, programming at least part of the broadcast week until it flipped to classic rock in 1991.

Radio and Records this morning reported 104.1 going smooth jazz. Likewise, All Access did the same, except for 106.7. So who is doing smooth jazz...104.1 or 106.7....or both?

BOTH will be but as of 7pm local time AGM was still simulcasting El Sol on both 106.3 and 106.7 while 104.1 kept having dead air between Jazz tunes.

104.1 Mega site is Down and Gone. KAGM's site is still up and will be for the next ten years with the AGM web people whose sites look like some High Schooler is doing for intern credit

Clear Channel still has Smooth Jazz programming on 101.1 "The Cat", primarily a Santa Fe area station, and separate "new" Smooth Jazz programming on 104.1 whose signal covers a much wider area. Guess there's no Party in sight for Abq as happened with the Denver Mega station. AGM still has "Sol" programming on 106.7 and is simulcasting on 106.3 -- except the delay is still on at 106.3. Given the two stations are right next to each other that makes for an interesting instant reliving of your Spanish melody memories as you turn the dial from right to left. Bet they had quite the staff meeting today at AGM.
