Quick Little Guessing Game

Yesterday at around 11am CDT, I was in the car at Janesville, WI, checking out the local radio dial. The five channels between 1380 (WBEL) and 1440 (WROK) were almost blank. Almost, but not quite. According to R-L four of the channels were not within range of any station (by their calculation). Two others were essentially "borderline".

I heard, and was able to ID something, on all five. Good....but not great....GM stock radio. Janesville is about 55 miles northwest of my home location.

Does anyone want to take a guess as to what were the five stations that I heard? One per channel. No fair peeking at R-L. :)

I'll play. I'll guess 1390 as WGRB, 1400 WRJN, 1410 WRMN, 1430 WEEF. For 1420 I doubt you would hear Michigan City, but I'll guess WIMS because I don't know what else it would be.

You got three of 'em. I'll reveal the answer earlier in a couple of days. Sooner if no one else wants to take a stab at it, or if someone else guesses correctly. FWIW, I wouldn't have gotten all five of them myself.

I'll give it a try, even though the last time I was even near Wisconsin (about 30 feet south of it) was at the Naval Training Center, hi.

1390 KCLN
1400 WRDB
1410 WRNM
1429 WOC
1430 WBEV

I only looked at R-L to check the call letters. I used only the NF8M coverage-map listings for clues. The letters on that otherwise swell site are too small :)

Steve: You got two of 'em. Now let's see who can connect the dots!

Well, I was in Beloit a few weeks ago in mid-afternoon. Did a quick bandscan, but not really anything serious. Anyway, here's my guess:

1390-WGRB
1400-WRJN
1410-WRMN
1420-WOC
1430-WBEV

I am quite sure about all except 1420, and I can't imagine what else it would be.

I agree with KenoGuy. I didn't think WIMS was it. Just a wild guess on my part. I also was doubtful, but not certain about WEEF.

Keno guy is our winner! Congratulations. The prize is free beer tomorrow!

For those unfamiliar, Beloit is about 14 miles south of Janesville. Here's what I heard on my stock GM car radio in J-ville.....

1390: WGRB very weak. I thought maybe I'd get a whiff of WRIG or KCLN. No such luck. WGRB was alone on the channel. WRIG is too far north. KCLN is nulled east-west.
1400: WRJN. Strongest of a weak bunch. I thought I might hear WRDB, which is probably aboutthe same distance as WRJN, but situated in poor ground conductivity.
1410: WRMN A mild surprise
1420: WOC. A bigger surprise than WRMN. I could hear something even weaker underneath. Couldn't ID it. Perhaps WIMS, WGXI (Plymouth, WI) or even KTOE
1430: WBEV, Probably second only to WRJN in signal strength, but a little hard to determine due to the slight splatter from WROK. WEEF is too directional to make it to J-ville. I also thought WCMY might be audible. But too far south and only 500 watts.

Thank you, thank you! A sixer of Leinenkugels would be great!

I happened to be in my old truck for that trip to Beloit. I have a late-90s vintage Pioneer AM-FM-CD unit in the truck that's very sensitive, but so-so on selectivity. I was surprised WGRB was as good as it was. WRJN always seems to go pretty well out there, and the same for WRMN. I don't recall stopping on 1420 or 1430; WBEV seems to be everywhere in S. Central WI though. I can even hear it rumbling under WEEF in Kenosha.

1420 was just a wild guess. WIMS is rough even on the Lake Michigan shore in Kenosha, so that wasn't gonna happen. And the Plymouth station barely hits Milwaukee. So, I got lucky!
