Can the NYC/Philly radio stations reach all of Jersey?

The short answer: under normal conditions, not likely. The ONLY AM'S from NY that would reach EVERY INCH of NJ would be the 50,000 watt monsters, WABC, WFAN, WCBS...all the rest are directional including some 50K stations like WOR, etc.. I doubt that any PHILLY AM's except WPHT because of their NON-Directional signal would reach ALL of NJ...maybe 640 Radio Disney all day...and maybe 950 WPEN, but PEN is directional too...WIP has a great signal and so does WFIL...and back in the day, BOTH may have reached a good part of NJ...but today with all the noise and HD junk, I doubt it. WIBG 990 used to reach most of NJ, but not any longer during the day.

It's possible I left out one or two that MIGHT reach ALL of NJ during the day from both NY or Philly. Maybe someone with better coverage knowledge can lend a hand. There are MAPS that may SHOW a particular station reaches all of the state of NJ (like WABC or WFAN or WCBS) but even the 50K boys realistically can't do that any more...a small handful might. With a good AM tuner...ALL of them MAY be heard through all the noise, but not for listening pleasure.

Nights are a whole other ballgame...but with Fidel in Cuba still our enemy, he blocks many channels with powerful xmitters...example: 710 WOR. I can't get it in Toms River at night. Even the once mighty 770 and 660 is icky at night nowadays here. Bad ground conductivity prevents 1210 from coming in decently here.

Oh...just thought of this one....Believe it or not, 640...radio DISNEY comes in VERY well here. But as soon as official sunset happens, they are totally unlistenable due to their major power down issues.

Most AM's are either the pea-shooter AM's on the local channels and some are even directional...and even the higher power AM stations are ALL directional to my knowledge. FM's out of NY may reach AC if you're on top of one of the hotels...same with Philly FMs...any that aren't directional or short-spaced. Please add to this Sam...or anyone who really knows...

During tropo, it's possible for the NYC and Philly stations to cover most of NJ. WFPG covers 2/3 of the state in the summer. Just yesterday, I was able to receive 92.3 NOW reliably in Atlantic City, but that was 43 floors above the ground.

It depends, a lot, depending on what kind of radio / antenna setup.

In my 2004 Audi A4 with stock car radio here's what I have gotten around the state.

No single FM station (even NJ based) reaches all of the state.

Using NJ's two major cross-state roadways, the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike:

- generally speaking no FM radio station from New York City makes it much farther South than Toms River (Parkway exit 82) or Bordentown (Turnpike exit 7).

- generally speaking no FM radio station from Philadelphia makes it much farther North than Edison (Turnpike exit 10) or Parkway exit 128.

- large chunks of the state are also served by full power radio stations from Wilmington, DE and Allentown, PA.

Of course, a stationary antenna atop a tower or tall building will add to this. From atop some of the Atlantic City casinos you can get FM radio stations and TV stations from Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore and Salisbury, MD quite easily.

Even on AM no single station is easy to receive all over the state. During the daytime the stations that come closest to covering the whole state would be New York City's WFAN and WABC however in places such as Salem, Woodstown and Bridgeton even these stations fade in and out and get noisy.

I'm up in Bergen County and none of the Philly AM's come in well up here.. You can get 640 during the day and thats about it....1210 WPHT does come in at night but the signal is filled with noise....950 WPEN is even worse than WPHT.....Not sure how well 990 comes in but I bet its hard since 970 WNYM's transmitter is only about 5 miles south.....I will say I was shocked the other night to hear KYW 1060 up here which I have never got before....1050 was bleeding all over it but I still was able to hear the broadcast.

I assume the question is more appropriately asked on any random parcel of the state. All of the state is covered, not all stations cover the state. 100.3 and 101.1 are eminating from both markets, so obviously CBS-FM on 101.1 would not be heard in Cherry Hill in favor of B-101.

WMMR, for example, is all over the Northwest and central to the South of the state. Most of the state can pick up most of the stations from both markets reasonably well in the car.

WXNY, is the best signal out of NYC, by virtue of a further separation of co-channel than most of the other Empire signals - but that was why they paid 45mil for the freq.

Now, if another blackout occurred in NYC, some Philly stations would cover the entire state. I don't think that works conversely because Empire is too far north for Cumberland County reception.

Dial congestion is key. When practically all of the Atlantic City stations were off the air this past Saturday, all kinds of stuff was being heard in South Jersey (Baltimore, DC, NYC, Allentown, etc.) almost like locals. The dial is so jam packed with stations (and now HD) - getting a station outside of the purple contour on radio-locator maps should be considered DXing.

After 9/11 when 93.1, 93.9 & 103.5 lost their transmitter, WMMR, WYSP, WPRB & WNNJ-FM all were real strong here in NE Jersey....In fact since 93.9 was off then went to low power for awhile, I used to tune into 94.1 often since it had a pretty good signal......During the 2003 blackout, when many of the NYC stations were out, I was able to get the Philly stations very clear....I remember listening to 100.3 WPLY pretty clear along with 97.9 WBSX from Wilkes-Barre & 101.9 WAVT from Pottsville......It was crazy to see these stations boom in up here when the major NYC's are off.

Back in about 1982, my mother had an '81 Toyota Tercel wrapped around a nice analogue tuned radio. Unlike today's digitals, that radio was able to tune WMMR in on the Garden State Park(ing lot)way up past Union and Newark.

The signals are there, but "ccuphl" got it. It is congestion. Even if the radios had better front ends, co-channel is a major problem. The only thing power would do, is give better portable coverage. But I've lost CBS-FM in favor of B101 on top of the Driscoll Bridge - while looking at Empire!

I don't lose "The Little Guy" (105.9 WQXR) until 105.7 "Hawk"s over it.
