Quick Thoughts on the New Channels

They have only been on the air for 18 mins. now but I am enjoying them. Big Tracks looks like something I will enjoy and will make my presets and the Chill might have me listing to Techno/Dance for the first time in a while.

Big Tracks is nothing new for me. We got 2 FM stations (WQBW and WHQG) in Milwaukee that sound exactly like it.

Chill is good. The music is relaxing and mind enhancing.
______________

I like 49, sounds good like the mix.
Do have a question.
Does Top trax have any djs?

So far, I like Big Tracks...However, I think Top Tracks was fine the way it was and liked the variety of classic rock they played. Now, as two separate channels, I'm curious to see how well it will work out. I have to admit though, I was VERY happy with the first two songs I heard on Big Tracks; "Lonely Is the Night" by Billy Squier and "Bang Bang" by Danger Danger...Two songs I haven't heard on commercial radio in YEARS. In fact, I can honestly say I haven't heard that Danger Danger song on FM since the old Z-rock days about fifteen years ago. Otherwise, it seems like they'll have a lot of overlap with Top Tracks as far as the artists and some of the songs played on both stations, so it almost seems pointless to add Big Tracks to the line-up...But for now, I like it and will keep listening to both channels. I am curious, which generation is Big Tracks referring to when they say "Our Generation" in the promos? I'm probably younger than what would be either channels target audience (28 this coming Sunday), but am more into "classic" rock than I am new rock.

As far as XM Chill, I didn't care for the music, but it definitely fills a need.

I'll have to listen during the day a bit, but from what I heard last night, the addition of the Cincinnati station didn't make a lot of sense...The show that was running is the same show that's on "Open Road" XM 171; do we really need two channels running the same show at the same time? Hopefully, their other programming is better; otherwise, adding WLW seems like a mistake.

Truckin' Bozo show originates from WLW, and when it was announced by XM they said that the show will be dropped from the "Open Road" channel I think by the 20th and you will be able to hear the show on the WLW channel. Since WLW is a simulcast, you will hear it on both channels till then.

Good channels

I listened to Big Tracks on the 55 minute drive to work and the wife and I loved it.

Standout songs for me:
Fine, Fine Day by Tony Carey
Crazy On You (Live) by Heart
On the Loose by Saga

Also listened to Chill all day at work and it really kept me concentrated on what I was doing yet kept me awake. I won't be going back to Watercolors (at work) for a while.

I am very happy with the additions.

Totally agree. It's something XM needed to be compatible with the rock genre of Sirius. Put it this way....it's better then having a transexual channel.

Top Tracks is Automated. No DJ's.

Re: Good channels

Saga? Tony Carey? I might not have heard those since, well, 1983 or 1984. (That Saga track REALLY takes me back!)

Cool.

Sounds like they're onto something.

BTW, FWIW, I don't get these channels as I'm a Sirius subscriber. But I think we can generalize and say that both satellite radio services are good at serving up music we might not otherwise get to hear on the radio. Hooray for both! :)

>> Let's see, I have a choice of two stations that play the exact same songs, except one has 15-20 minutes of ads per hour and jocks, and the other does not have any. Do I pay for the one that doesnt, and can go anywhere in the USA with my favorite type of music programmming or do I settle for the free one that has limited range of reception? Hmmmmmm- no brainer there.
Edited by AZJoe on 03/02/06 07:15 PM.

Re: Good channels

So far I'm really enjoying "Big Tracks". It seems to play a great mix and it also seems to stick to the hits of the time period. I'm glad for this. XM's rock category is way too deep and obscure overall, and another "hits" focused channel is certainly welcomed. Overall, even though I prefer Sirius over XM for most formats, so far, I have to give the music mix on "Big Tracks" the edge over "Classic Rewind" on Sirius. I'm really enjoying it so far. I hope they keep it just like it is and don't decide to go too deep or too hard with the playlist.
