Quick TV question for the oldtimers here ;-)

...what pro wrestling promotions were seen on Tucson TV in the "territory" (pre-WWF) days? I know Phoenix's KPHO-TV/5 ran Verne Gagne's AWA "All-Star Wrestling" for a while, did they get into Tucson as well? Any Lucha Libre too?...

Not sure I qualify as an "oldtimer" (or want that designation) and I don't have an answer to your question having left Tucson for the last time in '79 but....

I remember my dad taking me to the old Tucson Garden (alongside the 'scenic' Santa Cruz river in the old barrio as I remember) sometime around 1954 to see Gorgeous George. I remember him entering the ring and tossing his golden hair clips into the crowd. No memory of what happened next.

I don't remember it being on T.V. but I do remember seeing wrestling at a place called "The Sports Center" (I think). It was located near the Santa Cruz river near what used to be A.J. Bayless. Some of the wrestlers that I remember were "Pancho Pico", "Luis Martinez", and the "Dupreee Brothers". Maybe because Tucson was primarily hispanic, the heroes tended to be hispanic and the villains tended to be non-hispanic. Of course my memory may be fading... :)

Suddenly, a rogue chair flew out of the crowd, hitting our young hero from the back knocking him unconscious and leaving him permanently scarred...

I don't remember chairs flying but do remember my dad getting into a shoving match with a bunch of other guys when we were walking out after the fights were over. Apparently he thought they were crowding me. I don't remember ever going back for a rematch.

Ah, for the "good old days". ::)

....oh, wow! memories! Anyways, reaching back into my memory spools (i'm still trying to understand Digital), wressling was in fact on Tucson Television. KZAZ-TV Ch. 11 broadcasted a great number of matches ..... a majority of those were either from the Tucson Gardens or from the KZAZ-TV studios at 2445 N. Tucson Blvd. .....and they were LIVE with an audience! The most memorable match was against .....i believe his name was Tito Montez ..... who was turning purple cause he was in a head-lock. He was taken to St. Mary's hospital for treatment and I believe he survived but wow, what a match! :)
