So? It's a small town station... nothing wrong with having those still. In fact, I love hearing about small stations and the things they do. Yes, things like tell it and sell it, high school sports and local church happenings may seem hokey and corny to us but to people in small towns it's a connection to those around them. And let's say you're in the middle of no where, the local station is all you have and a tornado warning is issued... need I even continue that thought?

WQMS is viable if it's done right. A full service format with a truly local focus is the only way this station will have a shot at making any kind of money. Terry Bonner did it for years with WYKK (yes, I realize he sold ads to businesses in Meridian the new owner of the AM can do the same... trust me, they'll buy) so it's not impossible. What music would I put on there? PRobably standards. It's a nitche that's not being served by any other stations in the area so it would be a good format to try.

I wish the new owner well. Let's hope for good things for him.

Wonder if the new owner would take $15,000 for it??? If I had known they would have gone that low I would have snatched it up just because!!!

What does being Jewish have to do with anything?

You know, it's funny...

There are some towns that are more Jewish than others, and often it might surprise you.

Memphis -- where I live -- has a very large Jewish population (of which I am a member). Birmingham, a city of similar size? A sea of Gentiles. There are historic reasons, but it's all still interesting.

Strangely enough, Clarksdale has a pretty respectable number. But a Jewish radio station in Quitman? Oh, Vey!

Greenville, too. The national chain Stein Mart was started there as a Jewish-owned general store on the riverbank! There's a huge old synagogue downtown, also. Cities and towns on the Mississippi River or the railroads have historically had higher Jewish populations. I think it was mainly due to merchants moving down South and opening up businesses in the 1800s. I grew up in Brookhaven, where the oldest church is actually a synagogue! The town founders were from Brookhaven, Long Island (probably Jewish also).

You're right, of course.

Many of the Greenville people are related to the Clarksdale folks.

Interestingly, I have a really, really rare last name. There are a few folks there with the same name. I have often wondered how we are related.

But, I digress...

Having spent about four years in elementary and jr high in Quitman, I can assure you that there are (statistically speaking) NO Jews in Clarke County. Yes, there may be one or two.... but not enough to justify programming a station for... not unless they're gonna underwrite it from someplace else to support the station.

Strange... after my family left Quitman, we moved to Heuck's Retreat, just outside of Brookhaven... I always thought it was funny that the synagogue, the catholic church and first baptist were so tightly packed together in the same four blocks or so!

BTW... in case Chris and I were the only ones to remember... Bob Pittman (of MTV founding and AOL/Time Warner managment fame) grew up in, graduated from, and worked in Brookhaven radio before moving off to his infamy. (WCHJ-AM was the station, if I remember)

So, you're saying Bob Pittman is Jewish?

I grew up a few miles from Heuck's Retreat. I didn't know Bob, but knew of him. He also worked at "Nickelodeon" Record Shop at one time. It shut down a few years back. WCHJ is still on the air, BTW. It had country with local DJs up until around 1990, then went to satellite talk. It's a black gospel station now. There was also WJMB, which didn't last beyond 1990 or so.

Speaking of infamy, I did see Bernie Ebbers around town once or twice!

Uhhhhhh.... no. Never even suggested it.... he left B'haven long before I lived in that hamlet. I did work at WCHJ and knew of the lore of Pittman however. But, I never once discussed his heritage OR his religion/faith. Not once. And not once in my post did I mention his heritage/religion/faith. For the record.

Chill,Dude. Little humor there. This string just started bouncing from one subject to the next, without relevance,so I was going with the flow. From Quitman, to jewish programming, to Pittman....let's just let it go,k?<P ID="signature">______________

yes I can vouch for Clarksdale and it also proabably has far more lebanese than most cities in the mid-south. Not allot of places you can order Kibby, Hummus, and a piece of Chocolate pie thats to die for

Back when i was in high school and in radio in Clarksdale (& Cleveland during the summer) there was a jock on Bad94 with the same name... so both cities had a Michael Knight on the air.
