Quixie did not do a turkey drop?

I think I've heard this confirmed before, but the WKRP Turkey Drop episode did NOT really happen at WQXI, right? Or anything similar? For my money, the stuff Ross and Rex did at WIIN was just as bizarre.

I believe the QXI one was from the back of a pickup not a helicopter. But that's doesn't make good TV.

According to GRHoF Inductee Jerry Blum, the original turkey drop took place at KBOX Dallas. The story must have stuck in his friend Hugh Wilson's memory when he wrote the WKRP version.

I remember being at WQXI's Turkey promotion in Piedmont Park way back on Nov. 1966. They called it the "TURKEY JERKEY" where the DJ's raced the turkeys in a pen. The listeners who attended voted for their favorite DJ as to who would win the race with their Turkey. I remember voting for Dr. Don Rose and he won which meant I also won the WQXI prize package.

Nope, there was no Turkey drop at all on WQXI. Just about 6 turkeys off the back of the truck that the DJ's raced around. I don't ever remember the station doing any other Thanksgiving promotion with Turkeys. WQXI had moved on to more important things like the Raft Races.

Actually, in the late 1970's there was a promotion where they pretended to open the window of their high-rise location and drop a turkey out of the window. They had the sound effects of a window opening, the wind blowing, a turkey gobbling, and the sound of it dropping. This was a call in promo with prizes associated with it, but all I won was a t-shirt . . . I think this was a regular Thanksgiving promotion for a few years.

OK - 1966, last time WQXI did a promotion with real live Turkeys instead of sound effects playing on a cart machine.
