QVC owner buys HSN for $2.6 billion

Liberty Interactive Corp. and HSN Inc. (HSNi) have entered into an agreement that will see Liberty Interactive acquire the 62% of HSNi it does not already own in an all-stock transaction.

The deal is valued at $2.6 billion, including debt. HSN and QVC will remain separate brands.

Liberty owns shopping network QVC. QVC is the bigger of the two retailers, with more than 8 million customers, while HSNi has more than 5 million, with about 2 million customers overlapping, the companies said. QVC is in 104 million homes and HSN is in 91 million homes, they said.

The acquisition, which awaits regulatory approval, is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter. Approval of the Liberty Interactive stockholders is not required.

For a mixture of products there is:

QVC and QVC2. (QVC2 being a mixture of the Best of QVC and more live programming 6PM-12AM Monday-Friday and 10AM-3PM on Saturday/Sunday).

HSN and HSN2. (I don't get HSN2 on DIRECTV. Is anything on live or is it all The Best of HSN?)

And then there's EVINE. (Formerly Shop HQ, Formerly ShopNBC, Formerly ValueVision).

Then there are specialty channels:

QVC's Beauty IQ. Selling beauty products 24/7 mostly best of programming with limited live shows.

Then there are half a dozen channels that sell Jewelry and Gemstones.

Jewelry TV (once known as America's Collectible's Network)
LC (Formerly known as Liquidation Channel)
Others that take up spectrum on DirecTV.

There are a couple others that pop up for a few hours a day on some of the nearly dozen or so all-infomercial channels carried on DirectV. There's one that sells "art". There's one that sells "crafting products".

Does the Coin Collector Channel still exist? They used to air in regularly scheduled blocks on the now defunct Shop-at-Home Network. They had online programming and later showed up in blocks on the Channel 74 back when I used to have COX Cable. Channel 74 was listed as Leased Access and showed infomercials from "ONTV4U" and they showed the Coin Collector Channel.

I remember Suckyvision oh I mean Cablevision never had HSN only QVC finally got HSN in spring of 2001 on Charter Spectrum. I don't watch any of the home shopping channels Charter Spectrum added QVC 2 & HSN 2 don't get them thou.

Wow that's amazing that both QVC and HSN still exist in an era when Amazon and Ebay drown out the discussion of shopping from home.

tell that to those old folks who have no clue how to use the internet

I use to order books on Amazon for my grandma. A month or so ago she says "can you order more than just books on that Amazon?"

It's not just old ladies. A lady I'm friends with is 51 is a QVC customer. Has been for years. Her son and I were supposed to go on the QVC tour last year, but something came up and we couldn't go. But when I was telling him about the tour he's like my Mom is gonna be so jealous. She's been a QVC customer for years.

My Mom is gonna be 68, but she shops QVC and HSN. Along with AMAZON.COM, JCP.COM, BOSCOVS.COM, TARGET.COM, BN.COM but she also goes to the Brick and Mortar locations of Boscov's and Target and Walmart. QVC is in it's 31st year. My Mom became a customer after the CVN network closed down. And back then she not only ordered stuff from QVC, but from catalogs. Remember The Sears and JCP catalogs? We had what was called a JCP Catalog store in the town where I grew up. You would order the merchandise from the catalog and you could ship it to the catalog store rather than having to go to the big stores at the mall.

The merger is in response to increased competition in retail in general. There are a LOT of players going after the same dollars. As far as I can tell, both QVC and HSN will continue to run separate channels for now at least.

JCP had a catlog store near where I lived although that closed years ago.

The main advantage is the buying power they have to get exclusive products at low prices. There are some products you can only buy at HSN or QVC, and they sign exclusive deals with celebrities for those products. Owning both major shopping channels will give them that exclusive buying power. It helps position them against the online shopping sites.

Some products air on multiple shopping networks and some have changed networks. I know BOSE Radio is on both QVC and HSN. And I believe Track Phone is sold on HSN and EVINE. HP products are sold on both QVC and HSN. Apple I think is on QVC and EVINE. Suzanne Summers used to sell her products on HSN. Now she sells them on EVINE. After the scandal a few years ago that caused her to get yanked from QVC, Paula Deen now sells her products on EVINE. Wendy Williams (the talk show host) used to sell a line of products on QVC. Now she sells her clothing line on HSN. Judy Crowell a one time host on QVC back in the day now has a jewelry line that is sold on EVINE. A former host from QVC is now a host on HSN. Steve Bryant was a long time host on QVC and he ended up on the now-defunct Shop-at-Home Network. Boyd's Bears were sold on QVC for years. Then they switched to HSN. (Now the company that bought out Boyd's stopped making them).
