QWK gone?

I notice the QWK website is still up, although frequency removed as well as links, but the streaming still works.

I have an idea it is going to reappear on another Forever station. We shall see.

That's it. They'll move Quick Rock to 1450 and slap ESPN on 99.5. That's the ticket!

With 1450's tower right there on Porter Road, it booms into the PSU dorms--the kids get it on their toasters--so it'll be a big hit with the students. Then they can put The Revolution on 1390, and they'll revive the entire AM band! It's the beginning of something HUGE. They're visionaries!

Funny you should mention WQWK on 1450 AM. Forever has applied to the FCC for WQWK call letters to be parked at 1450 AM.

WMAJ 1450 AM has been heritage call letters since the beginning of 1450 AM.

So, you may get your wish.

hate to say it, but i told you so. :D

folks at forever did confirm this.

A shame that QWK's gone. And just 6 weeks shy of me celebrating the 40th anniversary of my very first paying radio job. That was at QWK, September '69 in my senior year at PSU.

"Abbey Road" had just been released, and of course every cut was in heavy rotation, especially since the station's signature sound was to play a Beatles song at the top of every single hour after the legal ID. That habit had started with the station's debut a year earlier, and it was no easy decision to drop it, somewhere around 1973. By then I'd already been QWK's program director, quit, moved around some and come crawling back.

Stayed as a DJ until 1974, when I finally got a job at another station out of town.

Punchline: I'm still there.

R.I.P., QWK. Thanks, Wendy Williams, for hiring me despite the horrendous fake aircheck I made (which I still have).

It's only worth doing if it's QWK Rock 1450 HD.

Not that anyone other than me in Centre County has an HD radio, but AM HD is music worthy.

Not really. I just picked one off the carcass of Circuit City back in January. Along with 5 other people probably. Point is, with no real HD stations within range, there's no point in owning an HD radio, thus I am one of a very small group of people that actually own one. Didn't mean to sound snooty.

It's nice when I go to Harrisburg or another city, but the only HD station around here is WPSU, and transmitting in HD doesn't make NPR any more interesting. So, I am pulling for Forever to put a few bucks into an HD transmitter for 1450 and sticking WQWK on there. So is my wife, who is mighty upset about QWK being gone.

There are a few facebook groups, but here is the biggest one: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111805118582
At present, there are 40 some comments including some from a few QWK jocks.

I personally think it was a good decision. Those who still want to hear QWK rock in the car should buy and iphone or blackberry and stream it over the internet. A lot of people have already started streaming internet radio in the car because radio stations play the same tired songs over and over.

I do think that some sort of Adult Alternative station would be a good fit for the market. If it were me, I'd keep take WBUS and make it a AAA station. It would still appeal to a lot of classic rock lovers and it would also have a greater appeal to the young professional. People might not go to other listening options if there was a local station with a deeper playlist. Plus college kids love Snow Patrol, Wilco, U2, Coldplay, and Mat Kearney.

I also think that a Classic Hits or Modern AC format would be a good fit on an FM talk station during the overnights and on weekends. PPM is showing that these FM news or sports talk stations do not get the high ratings during off-hours.

Forever put money into am hd? keep dreaming.

Yeah, I know. They will sooner or later, but almost certainly later.

I don't think HD radio is going to ever catch on. It will die out before it ever gets going. Internet is the future of radio...so much more choice compared to HD.

So QWK went to the internet and noe there simulcasting WRSC Talk on the FM Hmmm FAIL. FM talk will not go well in State College. They just took the only Hard Rock Station in State College way now you have Classic Rock and Three County Stations... Wait Two County Stations that simulcasts and The other station. I'm really surprised it's still even on the air with the way they run there station( and you know who you are). which just proves my point that you cannot fine good music and radio in Altoona or State College.

What's up with Wish, WOWY, and Joe?

QWK must have been more profitable than at least one of those stations.

2510 has taken Forever's leftovers before (debuting B94.5 after Hot signed off). Would they do it again?

No disrespect but I must correct you. WRSC-FM and WRSC-AM are not completely simulcasted. WRSC-FM has Kevin and Pat until 9 AM and then it goes to Beck, Laura Ingraham, Hannity, etc. WRSC-AM has Kevin and Pat until 10 AM with Lion Country Comments returning to the airwaves. Then a whole other line up of shows follow.

The two Froggy stations are not simulcasted at all. Froggy 101 and Froggy 98 have different jocks. They both play country music but they are not programmed the same. Froggy 101 also seems to be less "Froggified." And then there is also Joe FM.

I cannot speak to what makes "good music" as it is in the ears of the beholder. An old guy like me likes news and oldies. There was a time when my ears could bear QWK but no for a long, long time.

QWK Rock's site is down...apparently the domain expired. So now they're not even streaming online.

So much for Forever's "Damn the man" gimmick.

No. The domain has not expired just yet. As you can see below it will expire in 3 days. And I would assume they will renew it before that; otherwise, someone else will pick up the domain and use it. I know I would. Here is the WhoIs info:

QWK is not the only thing that is gone. If rumors are true, the great radio turnstile is active again. Spinning to reveal the newest savior - as another former genius now flunky is rejected and cast aside to the Forever junkheap.
Funny? yes. Sad? yes. Disgraceful? definitely.
