R&B Oldies work?

Wonder how r&b oldies would work? Check it out of San antonio's ratings KTFM is climbing up fast playing old school r&b Rhythmic / oldies. They also do a noontime freestyle type dance mixshow weekdays. I wonder how much better 92.1 would do if Radio one would flip to r&b oldies?

Wouldn't that hurt KMJQ?
______________

R&B Oldies is a great idea but i may be the only one that think this but i think that KROI sould go back to "The 90's and Today". I personally liked this format.

I agree that "90's and Today" was good, but it was just a stunt, with no thought of any commitment. When they switched to their present format, they should have chosen the call letters "K-D.O.A."

Now for a totally off the wall observation (or is it...?): if Radio One were really serious about cutting their losses, they'd switch 92.1 to JACK, and they'd do it in a week or so before somebody else does. That would whittle away at that $72 million they paid for KRTS. Sure, there are no guarantees, but if they stick with their present _LOSER_ format, the debt load might become manageable in, say, the year 2050 or so.

Yes, it would hurt KMJQ. That's exactly why Radio One went in another direction, rather than go with another R&B styled format.

It is actually one of the Spanish companies, Border Media Partners, that owns the new KTFM. And, yes they are doing a GREAT job with it. The format would work here and one of the Spanish companies here should give it a shot as well. They seem to be holding their own with KPTY, as an English language station geared toward Hispanics. They ought to try Rhythmic Oldies/Rhythmic AC with one of the struggling Spanish Outlets here. That is about the only option. Radio One won't do it, because of KMJQ. Cox won't do it, because of KLDE. CC won't do it, because it would affect KLOL/KODA. Rhythmic Oldies did very well here on the rimshots of KTJM 98.5 and KJOJ-FM 103.3. If they were on a better signal, I think it would be a good move.
______________

If Houston is going to get a "Jack" format in the next couple of weeks the only company that would be doing it would be Radio One on KROI 92.1.

I'm quite sure the R O knows by now that their Regional Mexican format is not working and it is not a problem with the signal, it is the format itself. I know next to nothing about Spanish-language formats but R O has a real loser on their hands and it is past time for them to switch formats. I don't look for Radio One to do any Urban format, R&B-Soul-Motown on 92.1, which personally I would love. I don't think they are ready to go the Urban Gospel route yet either. R O is very capable at many formats, they would be willing to invest the time and money on an excellent "Jack" format. I would say that KROI could well be "Jack 92-1" in a few weeks at the most.

Don't look for Cox Radio to do anything that would involve using some intelligence from management, there doesn't seem to be any at Cox. Any company that keeps a corpse on the air for the last two years isn't about to try a new format. I doubt they know where to even begin with a format change.

While I have seen absolutely no evidence of Cox Radio selling their cluster and leaving our great city, even though it had been rumored over a year ago that they would be do just that. I afraid that was just a rumor.

The one thing of interest and there has already been one explaination of why Cumulus has secured a $700M line of credit is to buy KRBE and the two Susquehanna stations in their home city of Atlanta, which makes sense.

Another possibility and this is pure conjecture on my part is that Cumulus may be working on a deal with Cox for the cluster in Houston. The four stations should sell for a range of $400M to $450M. Cumulus might get $50M for 97.5, although all Cumulus would be selling is the stick, which they own and the license. It would ideally be bought by a company that already has a presence in Houston and does not need office or studio space right away.

I don't think Univision gets any further outside of Hispanic orientated programming than Party 104.9 I don't think that a "Jose" is in their future. I said at the end of last year that Houston would have an Asian formatted station by the end of Summer and Liberman may very well bring us a pair, KQQK 107.9 and KJOJ 103.3. I realize those stations aren't paired at the this time, but shuffling around his simulcasts would be no big deal. There will be no "Jack" for LBI. Clear Channel has nothing to gain by switching to a "Jack" format in my opinion.

Cumulus is just getting going with KFNC 97.5 and I have a gut feeling that KIOL 103.7 may be staffed as far as Cumulus intends the station to be staffed at this time, which really sucks.

Infinity has nothing to change, the only task they have is to unload KIKK 650, which probably won't happen until 2006 or as long as Stern is still on KIKK, even though he generates no ratings. Infinity-Houston is just following orders from HQ. KILT-FM 100.3 and KHJZ 95.7 and Sports 610 are doing too well at this time to make any changes to them, other than the normal tweaks any smart company does with all their stations on a continuing basis.

I would love to see a "90's and Today" format, could that be a Clear Channel decision on KHMX 96.5 in a few weeks also?

R&B Oldies

that Jammin' Oldies format was a total dog. Really only Mojo in Cincinnati is doing it. Most stations you're talking about are really Urban ACs and some of these do very, very well.

I don't see Jack visiting the Bayou city anytime soon, especially after reading Guy Zapoleon's take on it. KIOL, KKRW, KHPT, KLDE, and KHMX muddy up the waters for that format here.

Then again, I could be wrong.
______________
