R&B Station

KYIZ's chance at a stereo FM translator came and went - and they never applied for one. Their loss. But Seattle doesn't have the demographics needed for a full-fledged Urban AC either. This isn't Dallas or Atlanta.
KYIZ sister station KBMS in Portland has a FM translator on 97.5. However their signal has a deep null towards the rest of the Portland metro area to protect KDOA-LP 97.5 and their signal is pointed to farmlands and forest instead of the metro area. Once 97.5 moves to 99.9. I'm not sure if K248DD will removed their null and expand their signal coverage to include the rest of the metro area.

Chris-Bennett Media Group LLC has undergone some significant changes and rebranding in recent years. Even though they sold The Medium/Seattle Medium newspaper in 2020, Chris Bennett remains involved in the newspaper as the publisher and editor, and now as the CEO of Tiloben Publishing Company. This company continues to offer both print and digital versions of its publications, with offices still located in Seattle@ 26th and Jackson

KRIZ 1420 and KYIZ 1620, the radio stations owned by Bennett Media Group, just proves to their ongoing presence in the media sector. Although Ztwins might not be making substantial or any profits and potentially be operating at a loss, it’s great that they are committed to serving the black community despite financial challenges. Their dedication to black community focused media is a significant aspect of their operations, and having deep pockets certainly helps sustain their efforts in this regard. I asked why not upgrade to FM?
It's not in their financial interest at this time but lead me to believe an upgrade is in their sights and future.
They stream@ Ztwins.com

Last rant : KUBE KTHP KNHC are not never were "urban". Last truly "R&B was KYAC/KKFX? if I recall.
Back in the 80's KNHC came close with their Saturday night hot mix also KPLZ KCMU. Since then the seasoning hasn't been quite right.

As Frank P. Barrow the longest active radio broadcaster in history (in my mind) says AM radio will never die!

KYIZ is pretty good. They seem to be Full Service R&B and Hip-Hop. On top of the music, you get Steve Harvey in the morning and Rev. Al Sharpton's daily Keeping It Real talk show.

Saturdays are more oldies leaning. Sundays are Gospel. The saddest thing about KYIZ is it doesn't have an FM translator somewhere. And if any station desperately needed an FM signal decades ago, it's KYIZ

1480 makes it here to western Alaska more often than youd expect, and sometimes better then youd expect... 1620 is a fight between it and Relevant Radio Sacramento.. with RR usually being on top

KRIZ 1420 applied with the FCC to continue their STA using one of the KYIZ towers. The STA is for 250 watts D, 125 watts night non-directional.

Let's see co-channel-wise: In Washington State there is: KUJ (Walla Walla), KITI (Chehalis). In Oregon there's KMHS Coos Bay. In Idaho it's KIGO St Anthony.

I don't see any eventual solution - Buy KBRO or KBRD? Thoughts ?

RE: Request Engineering STA extension

On behalf of Bennett Media Group, LLC, licensee of the above-referenced station, you are respectfully requested to extend special temporary authority for station KRIZ to continue operating with reduced power using one of the towers of the co-owned expanded band station KYIZ(AM) pending Commission further action on all similar dual band operations (due to loss of the licensed site).

As part of its AM Revitalization expanded band proceeding, the Commission is considering proposals whether paired standard and expanded band stations, like KRIZ and KYIZ, may be retained or assigned rather than surrendering one or the other broadcast license for cancellation. The timing for the Commission to consider these proposals is beyond station KRIZ’s control.

Having lost its licensed directional tower site, KRIZ will require construction of a new directional tower site, the expense of which is ill-advised for a small-market AM station like KRIZ should the FCC determine that a licensee must surrender a broadcast license for cancellation. Accordingly, additional time is needed to determine a course of action after the Commission decision has been made concerning paired standard and expanded band stations, like KRIZ and KYIZ.

In the meantime, STA is in the public interest so that the station may continue to broadcast important information to its listening audience.

Applicant certifies that neither applicant nor any party to the application is subject to denial of federal benefits pursuant to Section 5301 of the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, 21 U.S.C. Section 862.

Back in the old days when I worked for 1420 KUJ we sent quite a bit of signal into N Seattle/Shoreline/Lynnwood at night. My mom would listen to me, her personal afternoon guy, on her commute home from downtown Seattle to Lynnwood. In the winter, of course. KRIZ didn't interfere it seems. And KITI is not that far down the other way. Talk about being hemmed in.

KUJ exists now to feed their FM translator. They now drop to 900 watts ND at night. Not going to be much signal to interfere with KRIZ any more I think.

During December, KITI-AM could easily be mistaken for a local in Snohomish County......at 11am. Not much fading either. I wonder how KRIZ can be heard anywhere outside of Renton proper at that low of power with that behemoth in Centralia blasting away.

KITI sounds like a semi local sometimes up here. It's audible every night, but at varying levels

When KRIZ was off the air for about a week or so last year, the main station at night was KITI, with KUJ sometimes peeking through.

I was unaware that KRIZ lost their primary transmitter site. That was just up the hill from the Valley Medical Center in Renton. I always thought that the two stations -- KRIZ and KYIZ -- used the same transmitter site. I guess KRIZ used two towers, and one is non-operational? Haven't been by the transmitter site in ages.

KRIZ-1420 has always been a terrible station in terms of signal. They weren't even great in Bellevue. Hardly a peep in Mill Creek. But they used to have blues music and other unique Black music that KYIZ didn't air. My dad sometimes punched them in if his worksite (sheet metal/HVAC) was in south Seattle or Renton.

I was rarely able to get KRIZ when I lived in Edmonds, but simulcaster KBMS has a good signal across much of the Portland area. I will listen to that station occasionally and find it kind of interesting.

I could hear KRIZ in Lynnwood-very weakly, in the 1980s. KYIZ is only slightly better. But that Renton 1420 site has never been good. It has the ground conductivity of a peanut butter sandwich.

KBMS is audible up here too quite often
