R.I.P. ABC Sports (1957? 1961-2006)

The Last Telecast with the use of the ABC Sports Brand Name took place

today at the Little League World Series. An event that ABC had been televising

since 1963. Brent Musburger breifly mentioned it a few times on the telecast

when he thanked all of the ABC Sports crew that helped put together the

broadcast and how ESPN will now take over the broadcasting of LLWS games

on the network beginning next year. There was one thing I saw at the

production truck that had a date when the cameras went inside.

One of them had a date that said October 30th, 1957-July 18th, 1995 and a

signature logo on it.

I think that might be when ABC Sports got started before it was purchased

by ABC in 1961. Or it might be something else. That was something that

I saw that I wanted to point out.

It's going to feel real weird when I watch ABC College football on Saturday

and see ESPN on ABC for the first time.

Don't get used to it. I suspect the ABC affils are very unhappy with the decision to promote a cable network on their air. My guess is this will last a year or two then they'll revert to calling it ABC Sports.

According to http://littleleague.org/llws/schedule/sun27R.html the title game was rained out and will be made up tomorrow night, televised on the Deuce. So ABC Sports' swan song pre-"ESPN on ABC" turned out to be a rainout. What aired in the non-game's place?

oldvnewschool, wasn't 7/18/95 the day Disney bought CapCities?

Back in the late '50s/early '60s ABC got most of its
sports programs from a company known--what else?--
as Sports Programs, Inc., headed by a man named
Ed Scherick (sp?). ABC eventually bought the
company and transformed it into ABC Sports,
"recognized around the world as the leader in
sports television" (ha, ha today), under the leadership
of Roone Arledge.

Also, did anyone know that NBC Sports was once part
of the Peacock Network's news division?

There was another Little League game played in place of the rained out Championship. I wasn't sure which one it was though, if it was an earlier game from this year, or perhaps a championship game from another year. I was at my mother's house and my brother and I were just flipping around on the dial and landed on it for a few minutes, but didn't stay on it for long.

Maybe they will mention it on ESPN 2 but I doubt it.

I'm certain that some might be confused on why ESPN is being mentioned

a lot. But with Discovery Kids on NBC, or Nick Jr. on CBS, or Kids WB on CW,

I don't think there will be much uproar on that part.

Good point on July 18th, 1995. I forgot that that's when around that time

that Disney did purchase ABC.

Nonetheless, I wonder if they will still use ABC's Wide World of Sports

for their blanket coverage for all of the smaller known sports shown on

the network?

It was the Consolation Game between Mexico & Beaverton, OR.

Had to be as that was the only other game scheduled.

That said though, you would think Little League would have enough sense to press on with the Championship Game instead since they already had the network on the air. But alas, they didn't.

Cheers :)

What do you mean by that, Pat? Wait out the rain as long as needed?

No, they re-ran the US Championship between Oregon and Georgia. The consolation game was also rained out and was canceled because they could not work it into the Monday schedule.

If they could, yes. Even if it meant putting the game on in primetime (Dontcha think it's about time that ABC/ESPN on ABC start treating that last game of the LLWS with the respect it deserves? It's earned its keep IMO).

Cheers :)

I bet the Championship Game was rescheduled for Monday & moved to one of the ESPN networks though. If not, I wouldn't wanna be a LLWS official. 'Dem folks down south can MEAN. :)

Cheers :)
