R.I.P Canwest Global

Canwest Global is now Shaw Media.

Canwest Global dies as sale of TV assets to Shaw reaches final stage.

"Viewers of Canwest Global television stations will start to notice minor tweaks in the Canadian-produced content, including a gradual shift of branding to Shaw Media. The company will retire the Canwest production name from the closing credits of programs, for example..."

Nothing on GlobalTV.com for now, though they've changed the copyright notice to Shaw Communications, and reference the new corporate name on the "About" page..

Shaw Media is home to many of Canada's most-loved television brands. Our conventional television network, Global Television, reaches almost 100% of Canadians and is complimented by 19 specialty networks including HGTV Canada, Food Network, History Television and Showcase.

It's cheaper to keep the global name for news content, so no matter where you are, a global mic can be used, but who really knows?

For example, CHEX tv Durham (Already previously owned by Shaw/Corus) can now become Global tv Durham (if they wish to do things that way).

That way, if the big news story is about someone who robbed a bank in Durham, then came up to Toronto and struck again, They could use the same mic for the story...heck, they could even use one reporter to appear on both stations holding the global mic!

There's the money saved! I honestly have no idea if Shaw plans to do things that way, or if they want Global Toronto to operate as it's own station under a whole new (Toronto related?) name...time will tell!

One thing for sure, I highly doubt they'll call it Toronto 1! LOL!
(remember that short lived station?)

To strengthen that further, what I DO expect to be dead are the days of a CHEX mic and a Global mic showing up in the same shot when there's news ANYWHERE to be covered.

Jeez, the flag they put on the mic costs what, a couple of bucks?

Perhaps, but it's cheaper and more efficient to have one person hold one Global mic, as oppiosed to two people holding two mics with two flags.

And it's more efficient to have one brand as opposed to putting two brands on one flag...

Certainly when CHCH was co-owned with Global they didn't tend to duplicate coverage, most of the time. Usually if there was news in Burlington or Oakville, Global just picked up a CHCH feed.
