R.I.P. COOL ROCK 95.9-WCQL

F

FMAM

Guest
I\'m surprised that nobody has already noticed this, but WCQL dumped their live Active Rock format, for satellite delivered Hot A/C, Friday night. This puts them up against 100.3-WKBE-\"The Point\", which, has a much better signal, and is live and local. Too bad, they were a good sounding small market rock station, with a better mix of music than \"The Edge\", in my opinion. Their signal was good from Saratoga Springs to Warrensburg, too, areas where you can barely receive \"The Edge\". They had been a Classic Rocker, from 1997, until earlier this year, when they morphed to Active Rock. They had done the Classic Rock format well, over the years too.

The appearance of Classic Hits/Rock on WNYQ, with its superior signal, late last year, probably forced the change to Active Rock, early this year, but since WNYQ is being moved to Albany, and probably won\'t remain a rock station, when it moves, makes you wonder why the brain trust that runs Idiotronics, simply didn\'t wait out, the departure of their competitor, rather than throwing in the towel. Also, strange that Idiotronics could do such good rock formats, and yet, do such a horrible job of \"Oldies\", as it does on WCKM. Sad that they didn\'t flip CKM, instead....

Well, it's only been a few days.

The Point has two "live and Local" segments a day. The rest is voice tracked from 50 miles away in Albany. 95.9 appears to have two "live and local" segments a day. The rest is shipped in from wherever. Kindly explain the difference and the HUGE disadvantage 95.9 suffers because of it.

Too bad, they were a good sounding

I thought they were okay until they started adding the new cuts. These old ears couldn't handle the new stuff they added.

Agreed.

Mr Luke, is that you? As a local business owner I can tell you. Money. This new format is the closest to a real AC station since the old WINK, a station I really enjoyed but the 21 year olds on this board couldn't stand. The new Cool Rock format was a real turn off to advertisers.

Also,

> strange that Idiotronics

What, did they not hire you or something. These guys have been thriving in our town for over 10 years. They are local, they know their audience and their advertisers. And they have plenty of both. Perhaps you'd like the Vox Real Estate Group to come back and ruin a few more stations.

I assume they flipped the Rock format because they realized they made a money-losing mistake and quickly fixed it, rather than let it drag on and keep losing money because they wouldn't admit they made a mistake. They didn't flip the Oldies format because, whatever you might think of it, it appears to be a money printing machine.

I think that the issue here is that WCQL is a 3000 watt station, and WKBE is a 25,000 watt station. I have to agree with the other poster, that WCKM is a completely rancid "Oldies" station. The former satellite delivered "Wheels 107.1" was 1000% superior!!!!

Unfortunately, this is the third time that Rock has failed on 95.9. Previously,

as WYLR, it was "Y-96-Classic Rock with a Kick", from 1991 until late 1995, when it abruptly went Country, for a couple of years, before reverting to Classic Rock, again, in 1997, as WCQL. They also had a run as an automated AOR station, back in the early '80s, again as Y-96, from 1981-1984...

whats wrong with WCKM? book numbers are good, sales are very good, and they have servived 11 years in the Glens Falls area without any trouble whatso ever.

WCKMs staff works very hard on proper presentation in the oldies format and they have added Thursday night Doo Wop Shop which has been prooven to be popular. The oldies format is ever changing due to the changing of the audiences age......somewhere there has to be a happy medium.

CKM=$$$ ? Try a :60sec (even during morning show..pukepuke)...brings in $20 a spot!!!!

I just wanted to post a message to all the Albany Broadcasters and Entertronics employess that have posted on this thread and lets be honest its not the average listener that post its the employees.

So 1st off cool changing its formate was in no way a decision of any of the air-staff or new additions to the air staff it was a decision made from the higher ups

as for the point and cool, sorry I mean hits one being more live and localk then the other, sorry fine folks at the point and hits niether of you are live and local to be honest with you you both use the satellite at least 18 hours a day with no real local feel so thumbs down to both of you for thinking that you are local and on the ball your not, you think you are and you believe that you are but lets not fool ourself your not, but its not the staffs faults its just a cheap way to do radio and it make the clays feel good inside that they are being community minded and local, your not

As for ads rates I called a variety of places including the post star and TV8 along with the radio stations in the albany market and let me just say that your ad dollars are better spent on TV 8 or the Point, Entertronics does charge 3 to 5 times more then everyone and I mean everyone that I surveyed, but if there is enough to go around thats great

So please read this and remember please check your ego at the door, this is Glens Falls, Saratoga area and you work in radio you cant get any lower in the media field so your all not that important as you think you are.

Actually, you're wrong. I have a real job, thank you. But that's not the point of my reply.

I think we can all agree that the preceding sentence wins the award for the longest, least coherent run-on sentence ever written. Congratulations. You’re parents must be proud.

And there it is: the runner-up!

And finally, an honorable mention.

One thing I've always loved about this board is the 'enthusiasm' shown whenever Glens Falls radio is brought up. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Now, while I'm not all that excited by 'Hits 95.9' - (Your Hits, Your Station? Yikes!) I will go and say that 'CKM is about as 'live & local' a station as Glens Falls currently has (or has had in awhile). With most of the AB stations tracked or off the bird, CKM stands out big time. Oldies playlist is average, but there are shows that I like. Saturday mornings are when I like to tune in to hear Kip Grant play those Northeast Nuggets so rarely heard anymore on the radio. But... most of the time I hear the same music I would hear on any other local or semi-local oldies station. One thing that sticks with me though is the processing. There's just something funky about it... whether it be STL degradation or just a cheap box, I don't know.

I know GF radio has come a long way since it's heyday decades ago, but CKM is (at least IMO) the most local sounding, in-touch station the area has (with Froggy a close second), and it has a personable quality about it that hasn't been seen much since the old days of WWSC, WENU or Wink. (Although lately I'm hearing the old WENU making the attempt to rise from the ashes)

Whether you like 'CKM or not, you gotta give em credit as they have stuck around while every other station in the market has flipped, moved, flipped again, and so on.

Hope that was coherent enough for y'all. :)

Just my $.02 worth....that morning show is so horrible I don't know how somebody hasn't done something, anything, to improve it...at least play some more music and a little less back slappin' and yuck yuck...last time I was in the area I had to flip the channel it was so bad, and I have been a fan of 'ckm since they signed on...you are correct in that they have stayed with the format when a lot of stations have dumped oldies; their spot load is very heavy so I'm gonna assume that they are making $$$ unless they are "traded out".
