Swimmer turned actress Esther Williams has died at the age of 91.
In the late 1930's, she won a number of swimming races and likely would have represented the U.S. (and maybe might have won medals) at the 1940 Summer Olympics in Helsinki and maybe the 1944 Summer Olympics in London had those two
Olympics not been cancelled due to World War II.
Although best known for starring in a series of "aquatic" musical movies in the 1940's and 1950's, Ms. Williams also had a television connection: She starred in two swimming-oriented TV specials on NBC in 1956 and 1960; and served as expert analyst for coverage of synchronized swimming for ABC at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the first time that sport was held at the Olympics.
