R.I.P. HOT 104 2002-2006

Today, the entire staff at HOT 104 in Mobile was let go.

As the longest-running PD in the history of the frequency (there was a total of six PDs at Star 104/HOT 104) this is sad day for me, because I put so much of myself into that station. Everyone who was fired this morning was personally hired by me.

We have much to be proud of, and everyone who worked at HOT has many of great memories. The station was a very different one, and much improved, from the time I arrived to the time I left, and I give all of the credit to an amazing team of people who made it happen, listed in no particular order: Scott Adams, Mo'Bounce, Foxy Roxy, B-Dub, TJ, Trey, Matt "Coot'r" Golden, Julie, Sid, Emily & Q-Tip, Justin, AJ, and Rob Sparks.

Although this is a sad day for all of us, let's keep the great memories alive. We had fun, didn't we?

The website is still up, although I don't expect it to last the day. Lots of great pics there if you want to check them out before they are gone: http://www.hot104mobile.com/gallery/albums.php

Congratulations to Jammer and his staff at WABB - this is surely a day to celebrate. Although, for HOT 104, I think the real party responsible for this day is a lot closer to home.

So, when is "104.1 The Party" signing on?

What a shame. This, unfortunately, comes as no surprise to me or to anyone else that has paid attention to the situation after moving on to other markets. There was so much potential in this signal, so many possibilities for an all-out CHR war in Mobile and Pensacola between WABB and HOT 104 that could have been both enjoyable AND profitable for BOTH stations and their airstaff. But, it's all gone now.

I had a great deal of fun in the Mobile market and would love to be back there someday, for both professional and personal reasons. Maybe someday that'll happen, maybe it won't.. but either way, today is a sad day for me, as HOT 104 still holds a dear place in my heart as the station that really moved me forward from being some kid doing part-time in central Illinois with probably no shot at ever doing much more than that to the guy working in St. Louis today.

As Ted already mentioned, there are some very talented folks on the beach right now. Sid (although he is not a fan of mine), Emily, Q-Tip, AJ, Coot'r, and Rob Sparks are all deserving of working for great stations. (I can't speak for the others, I've never had the chance to hear them) I sincerely hope that they all land on their feet very soon.

Best of luck to all of you. If there is anything at all that I might be able to help you out with, please don't hesitate to drop me an email or call me, if you have the cell number.

Congratulations to WABB, you guys stood your ground and prevailed.

Remember the original HOT 104 lineup?

6-10a Scott Adams (last with KCHZ/Kansas City mornings)
10-2a Danny Wright (now lives in Wisconsin)
2-7p Mat Mitchell (currently KZCH/Wichita mornings)
7p-12 Mo' Bounce (currently WHTF/Tallahassee nights)

> 7p-12 Mo' Bounce (currently WHTF/Tallahassee nights)

Mo' Bounce also spent time in Philadelphia at WIOQ, current home of the guy that followed him at night in Mobile, B-Dub (doing afternoons at Q102), who went to Milwaukee's WXSS (103.7 KISSFM) from Mobile, which is where Mat Mitchell was doing PM Drive prior to leaving for Wichita.

Nice little circle there, eh?

Other former HOT 104 staff and where they're at:

Production Director Jack Shell is now with Cumulus in that capacity in Nashville.

"Holder of Several Dayparts, Last Seen in Mornings" Heather Branch is now with 94.9 The Point in Norfolk.

Former morning guy Wayne Coy is (I think?) now in consulting after spending time as PD of WRVQ (Q94) / Richmond.

Former P/T TJ is now at WABB in the same role.

And, I'm in St. Louis doing part-time at KSLZ.

From the Star 104 days, former MD Mike Thomas ("Jagger") is now APD/MD/Afternoons for WKCI (KC101) in New Haven, CT. He also does weekends/swing for Z100.

If I'm missing somebody, feel free to fill in the gaps.

... but Hot 104 is still on the air

You say that Hot 104 is dead, but as of 5PM Wednesday they are still on the air. Is the staff working out a 2 weeks notice or are they gone? Is 104.1 just restructuring with a new staff or is a format change in the works?

If there is a format change, does it have anything to do with Cumulus recently breaking off their relationship with Baldwin Broadcasting? Could Oldies or AAA be 104.1's next format and WAVH or WZEW be the next victim?

Well, there would have been a full day's worth of music loaded into the WYOK Scott Studios system, so I doubt anyone would have been willing to both schedule and load a new log.

Plus, they may not have decided on the format yet. Look for stunting to start at midnight or perhaps even no stunting at all before the new format hits the air. You may hear Nelly one second and then ______ the next, you know? CHR on 104.1 is history, one way or the other. Apparently, someone on the staff found the website for the new station, which confirmed to them it was happening.

Were they searching websites just for kicks?

When they all say on A-A that it's NOT gonna be country, that means it WILL be country.<P ID="signature">______________

Yep, that's what I just found, too. I thought it was going to be country, about nine months or so ago, but I (along with one other person) thought it was going to be 104.1 The Wolf.

I have a couple updates from the Star 104 days:

Logan Kelly (Logan and Chris) is back in Panama City, Florida doing mornings at Sunny 98.5, WFSY.

Trey Matthews who replaced Logan in the morning is now doing mornings at Soft Rock 94.1, WMEZ in Pensacola.
