Condolences to the family and friends of legendary SEATTLE Top 40 personality LAN ROBERTS, who passed away (12/30) from complications associated with his long battle with cancer.

He graced the airwaves in Seattle at KJR-A, KOL-A, then hit KORL-A and KIKI-A/HONOULU, and did stints at KRQR/SAN FRANCISCO, and KBIG/LOS ANGELES. He is survived by his daughter JODI LIPFORD SMITH and her husband STAN SMITH. He's the OM at MISSISSIPPI RADIO GROUP's WWMS, WZLQ, WSYE, and WELO-A/TUPELO, and together they do mornings at Country WWMS (MISS 98).

Jerry Kaye, Bwana Johnny and Lan Roberts. A sad year of loss.

I am *SO* ready for this year to be over. The uptick is that we would have NEVER expected Lan to come up and visit this fall for Jerry's tribute lunch. The fact that he did, the fact that we all got to spend time together and have so many laughs and upbeat moments makes this pill a little bit easier to swallow.

He fought this and he had no shortage of friends on the sidelines cheerleading. Hard to think a person can die with anything more than that to hope for.

Although it may have been expected with all Lan had been through over the past few years...it still floors me to hear about the loss of Lan.....Lan and I first came in contact with each other in the 70's when he was working at KJR-AM and I right out of high school at 17--working my first on-air shift at KQIN and then moving onto KEZX, I rented a little house behind his house in West Seattle--kinda kewl having him as a landlord--he was a good one!!! I remember his dog---a doberman named "Blue," and that white VW Bus of Lan's, him skydiving and me chickening out--didn't have the guts to do it, but watched him skydive....He and I have exchanged e-mail semi-regularly since 1998 and I consider it a true honor to have known him......a great guy and absolutely fabulous on the air.....and even though it's a new generation of radio, I consider it a privilege to say "KJR" on the radio in Seattle......

Lan---you were one of a kind and definitely one of the best to have graced the airwaves of Seattle......Thanks for being you!!

Lan is now on the air in Radio Heaven with the likes of Jerry Kaye, Wolfman Jack, Bwana Johnny, "Emperor" Smith, & Alice Porter. As I recall, he also worked on 96.5 KYYX "X96" and I also recall Charlie Brown mentioning during KJR's "70's Reunion Week" that Lan originally created the character Clydie Clyde, which Charlie re-invented during his stint as morning personality back in the 70's. RIP, Lan. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, former collegues, and fans.
______________

My respects to Lan and his family. He fought a tough fight and held out as long as he could. Seattle's classic T-40 era lost another great today. Goodbye Lan.

I pulled this from his website: It was after he'd left New Orleans...

"The day I arrived in Seattle it was raining hard and [the] radio station was
a dump. I remember asking myself, "What have I done?" The next day was a different story. When I awoke I looked out the hotel window to
one of the most beautiful scenes anybody could ever hope to see. To
the south in the mist was Mt. Rainer looking like a giant bowl of
ice cream. The view to the west was the snow covered Olympic
Mountains. Down below were ferry boats moving back and forth on Puget Sound. It felt like home from the beginning."

I never had the privelege of meeting the man, but his voice was one of the reasons I started loving radio at a young age. My best to his family. He will not be forgotten.
______________

A TRUE radio legend passes! I never met Lan, but reading his own web site just a couple of days ago, it's obvious he was more than just a great radio personality...he was a wonderful, caring human being! I grew up in the early 60's listening to Lan and the rest of the line-up at one of America's great radio stations--KJR. It is Lan who inspired me to get into radio, from which I am now retired after 30+ years.
He will be missed! May you Rest in Peace, Lan. Condolences to his family!
An admiring life long Lan Roberts fan,

I first met Lan when Dick Curtis hired me to be the KOL Chief Engineer in 1969. As I recall, Lan had just gone back on the air after leaving KJR and waiting through a non-compete period.

What a pleasure it was, to be able to work with one of my idols!

One of the projects Lan wanted me to build, which I wasn't smart enough to do in those days, was a variable color lighting system in the KOL control room so that he could set the mood each day at the twist of a dial.

Lan had a natural sense of humor; he was real; he was spontaneous. Although he never got me to jump out of an airplane, at least he tried!

Our friendship was renewed several years ago; I would tell Lan what I had in mind for programming my radio stations, and he would help me refine my thinking. My wife and I had the pleasure of dining with Lan a few years ago in Dallas, and I was surprised and honored when he and his son showed up for my client picnic in Aberdeen (some distance from Bonham, TX) about 18 months ago.

Even though Lan aged rapidly in the past few years, once he opened his mouth he was the Lan we all remembered.

Today's news hit me hard. I wasn't ready for this one. Lan, I love ya...
you will be truly missed!

Nice mention of Lan Roberts in the Saturday P.I.

Bill Virgin did a nice tasteful job of telling us even more about the late great Lan Roberts for the Saturday P-I---it really is a good read....here it is cut and pasted along with the link:

Lan Roberts, 1936-2005: Top DJ in AM rock's heyday kept Seattle laughing
By BILL VIRGIN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Lan Roberts, one of Seattle's best-known disc jockeys in the heyday of the city's powerhouse AM rock stations, died Friday at his home in Texas of complications from lung cancer. He was 69.

"Lan Roberts was the greatest morning disc jockey in Seattle," said Pat O'Day, who was program director for KJR-AM when it ruled the Seattle airwaves in the 1960s.

"He had a childlike imagination that was a thing of beauty. He wanted radio to go beyond the mundane. He wanted to make people laugh every hour."

O'Day said people would stop him on the street and ask what had happened to Roberts 30 years after he had been on the air in Seattle. "That's a sign of greatness."

"He was a real character; he was very creative," added his sister, Mary Ann Lipford.

On the air Roberts could be many characters, including Clyde Clyde the Cow's Outside, Mr. Science and Jimmy, W.A.L. Street Senior, the Hollywood Reporter, Phil Dirt and The Breakfast Pig, O'Day recalled.

Born Lanny Lipford, Roberts grew up in Bonham, Texas, a small town about 90 miles northeast of Dallas. "He's been in radio ever since high school," his sister said.

Roberts attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, then worked in towns such as El Paso, Waco and New Orleans before landing in Seattle.

O'Day hired Roberts for KJR-AM in 1962, where he worked until 1968.

After defecting to the city's other major rock station, KOL-AM, Roberts returned to KJR in 1970 for a three-year stint, O'Day said.

He later worked for a station O'Day owned in Honolulu, then at an English-language station in Taiwan.

He returned to the United States and worked in San Francisco before moving to Bonham in 1994, his sister said.

Roberts kept up his connection to his former listeners and colleagues through a Web site on which he posted commentaries, including railing against cigarette smoking.

"He really enjoyed his Web site, writing his editorials," Mary Ann Lipford said. "He loved to write and talk about politics."

On his Web site, he recalled his move to Seattle: "The day I arrived in Seattle it was raining hard and the radio station was a dump. I remember asking myself, 'What have I done?'

"The next day was a different story. When I awoke I looked out the hotel window to one of the most beautiful scenes anybody could ever hope to see. To the south in the mist was Mount Rainer, looking like a giant bowl of ice cream. The view to the west was the snow-covered Olympic Mountains. Down below were ferryboats moving back and forth on Puget Sound. It felt like home from the beginning.

"Over the next 12 years the Seattle radio audience was wonderful to me. Their sense of humor was just about the sharpest that I had ever experienced. It was a natural place to be creative."

One of those creative inspirations was the Lil' Green Thing: "In 1964, as a joke, I mentioned on the air that if listeners would send me a letter then I would send them a 'Lil' Green Thing With a Picture of a Duck on It.' After two days I had received over 10,000 requests so I figured I had to do something quick.

"I bought an entire block of green cloth, cut it up in small pieces and stamped it with a picture of a duck. Just so there would be no confusion, I also stamped 'Lil' Green Thing' on it."

In addition to his sister, Roberts is survived by three daughters from his first marriage and two children from his second. Service arrangements were incomplete.

Lan (as did many that were close) KNEW he was going

THAT giving proof to an infinite higher-class of modesty - built into the 'ever-energetic-genius'
that had been solidly and soulfully embedded inside this absolutely outstanding one-of-a-kind human being.

If Lan could prevent any bad news regarding his CERTAIN upcoming death from being told, HE WOULD!
There were just a few editorials he posted for only a day in late '04 mentioning that his doctors told him
he only had less than a year, but took that as 'horsepucky' as he kept the faith didn't become deterred.

His very last wish was to go BACK to Hawaii, just to live out the rest of his life.

Thruout Lanbo's extensive career and from his website, we've all acquired (if not at the very least)
an intrinsical portion of ZEAL from a very heartfelt 'congregational communications man' -as he was.
Tuning in to KOL, Channel 95 and '96-Kicks' during it's heydays, we'll always remember listening to Lan's
inventive wit, sincere personal atones - and superfluous amounts of outrageous funniness.

Thank the Lord that 'Lantastic' did not leave this planet by any violent or accidental cause,
but instead and by his OWN choosing, bought the farm after living life HIS way thru shots which HE called-
- and call them HE DID!

Fans in Seattle and those in Taiwan should give Lan one big round of applause
for all that he has accomplished, helped - and left behind.

We will miss him immensely as we send our condolences to his family
for a very great radio talent and distinctive voice that's now been stilled.

Hopes also go towards a possible BOOK to be published - gathered from his materials.
Lan DID have a title in mind: "The Beatles Made Me Do It"
(but had difficulty getting the rights to use the name)

Let his legacy continue onward - to remind us that - in extreme cases -

-the truly good -die truly TOO young.
(esp those who had lived and breathed this business)

May God bless and keep Lan safe

Not as visible to the Seattle gang perhaps but let's not forget the loss of Olympia's Skip Marrow too. Indeed a sad year for fans of "old school" radio in this region. RIP to all of them and here's to hoping 2006 is a better year for radio and radio fans in the NW than 2005 has been

> Jerry Kaye, Bwana Johnny and Lan Roberts. A sad year of
> loss.

A fitting goodbye for one of the all time legends of our business last week in Seattle at Andy's Diner. Attended by an incredible group of individuals who have made the Northwest radio market so fun to listen to over the last 50 years.
As a result of the tribute, a site has been set up in honor of Lan.
As Charlie Brown said, " Thank you Lan. You were an inspiration."
